MADI over Coax / Maximum Length?
« on: June 23, 2009, 06:26:17 PM »

Hi,

We are setting up a pair of the RME MADI-LIGHT-PIPE coverters here:

http://www.rme-audio.de/en_products_adi_648.php

We are planning to use fiber for the MADI run's but also have the opportunity to run some additional coax and may end up not using fiber if the COAX works well.

I was just wondering what type of distance limitations anyone may be aware of with MADI over COAX.

The run is about 200' end to end with either a barrel style connector or BNC patchbay in a rackroom at around the 170' point.

The distance will not be an issue with MADI-over-fiber but we are also running several other coax for other purposes and might have some leftover.

Thanks in advance,
jonathan

Your application is very low bandwidth for current RG6 cable, so the length is probably not going to pose a problem.  Make sure to get solid copper core coax and not the copper over steel designed for cable TV installs.

Hey thanks!

The RG6 we are using is spec'd for SDI @ 100M.

Don't remember exactly now but I think it's Belden 1695A. I'll have to check later next week to confirm.

We pulled a couple extra's specifically for MADI and have also installed the plastic fiber conduit to install the fiber later.

I'll try to report back after testing within the next month or so with some measurements and anecdotal observations...

You know... The null test. MADI over Coax vs Fiber.

Cheers,

That Belden is a good choice for your application.  The Gepco VPM2000 or VSD2001 are also excellent.

Yup. Belden 1695A. RG6 Plenum.

No null tests or anything fancy like that but the MADI signal over 200' of this cable appears to work very well. Wordclock takes to that environment in a similar fashion.
