That's interesting, cause when I first had to start working on SSL's I thought they sounded like ass compared to what I had been working on, an API! I still think only the G+ is worth a damn. I'd rather mix ITB than use an E or a J.

Dave, J is coming from ITB, you'll have to forgive him.

i think the 6k E sounds pretty good.  maybe it's just the driver in this particular case.  i'm assisting on the mixes and the producer i'm working with has worked on this desk for YEARS, and knows how to make it do what he needs done.

API is pretty tough to beat.

Blasphemy I know, but I like to mix on my 4048.

But I would certainly not track through it.

Of course I have a ton of great hardware outboard gear, much of it tube and transformer.

I regularly mix on a 4048 G+ at a place in my town, and I like it quite a lot.  The room has great outboard, which, as Terry says, makes all the difference.

Lately I have preferred the 8048 in the room next to mine, however.

I'm on the verge of firing up an AWS 900 on its maiden voyage (as soon as the patchbay is finished).  Will the E series EQ's sound like a real E series? Will the quad compressor sound the same?  Stay tuned...

Cheers,

Ditto.  I have been eyeballing these units for a while. It's a drag that they are only 24 chan. stock.  For a mixing desk it would be nice to see 32 as standard, and dynamics on every channel.. that would be a perfect board to me.

Very eager to hear what a pro thinks in a real world situation!

EDIT: Ps maybe a good thread for the Acid Test forum Carter...

Francis Buckley and I will probably have the console up and running in its temporary space by Friday.

I say temporary because we still need to get the Otari Concept Elite out and do some work on the floor.

And then there's the wiring...

I will give my impressions of the board and the automation in J.J.'s forum.

Elaboration please, inquiring minds wanna know.  Is this a preamp issue?

I didn't realize it was a 6K. I dislike the sound of those even more! Is it plasma meters? There was a problem with some of those 6K's with plasmas. When you have line in to meters selected, the meter circuit decreased the headroom in the line in amps, and they don't have any to give up as it is!
I'm sure your guy knows how to get his sound outta the thing, but if you get some time with it yourself, try a few things: patch around the A/B/C bus crapola, leave the master status in Record and deal with the routing accordingly (you can't move the dynamics around to diff places for one thing). IMO opinion all E series and many G series open up a LOT when not in MIX status. Also you might try patching around the whole master bus VCA section and use an outboard compressor, then group the VCA grps to a master group for an automated master fader. Works wonders.
Lastly, mute any channels not used AND mute the small fader send. You can hear the noise floor drop as you are muting!

Yes, I was referring to the preamps.

Of course, in a pinch, with nothing else available, I could use them for tracking, and I would say use them well enough to get a decent sound.

It's just that I have so many preamps that I like so much more, I always go through them.

But no other console is a user-friendly in a mixing situation, at least ergonomically.

Ya, me too.  G preamps are ok, but nothing special.  I like E preamps less, the transformer version even less.  The J seemed like nothing special, but I never got too seriously into it, and the one time I was on a K (doing vocals no less), we had a 1073 going into a LA-2A directly into Pro Tools.  The console was just for monitoring.

Since this is a school, and the pre's on-board will be the only ones available in the room, we'll see (or rather hear) what we get out of the AWS.
