Barry,

He was not a pedophile,  Rocking children is an entirely different thing, one that would make me sleep.

I've been saying #2 for years.  In my case, it's a true story.

I guess I stand corrected Barry,  Robert Ross was supposedly underage when he seduced Wilde..

Well in those days there was no age of consent for homosexual relations, so any legal definition of paedophilia based on age of consent is a moot point in this case.

However 17 (Ross's age when they first met apparantly) is not pre-pubescent for most people, which is the clinical definition of paedophillia.

Whatever people's opinions on Oscar Wilde's sexual proclivities, I don't think we should be lumping him in with people who have sexual relations with pre-pubescent children.

I assume there was no "age of consent" for heterosexual relations as well.  Of course if one is under the "age of majority" in any legal sense...

But I can go with what Jon's written.

Actually there was, the year they met the age of consent was set at 16 (the same as it is today), for the ten years prior to that it was 13, and the 600 prior to that it was 12.

Though I'm not sure how much "consent" really came into it in the early days of the law, since apparantly the wording of the 1275 statute was along the lines of "It shall be deemed illegal to ravage a maiden who is not of age".

Glad you agree with me on the other stuff Barry.

Do you know why I like to have sex with twenty-seven year olds?

Because there are twenty of them.

EDIT: For those keeping score, here's a table:

Thanks Jon,

For saving the day - I feel bad for those guys  as by those standards RR  was over the hill-

The first thing that people think of often when OW is brought up is wit and the other thing that Barry wrote -  When in reality one of those things is exceptional  However,  there was so much more in the realm of philosophy and beauty that that fellow was about not to mention his singular example of natual ability.

Audio appropriate, from Barry's original post:

A bus station is where a bus stops. A train station is where a train stops. On my desk, I have a work station.
