Apparently it was difficult to operate this device, which had an oscillator, white noise (breath) and ten filters. It took a years training and considerable skill. Still, the technicians who controlled the Voder were still referred to as "girls".

Bill Mauchly of Ensoniq created a line of third party DSP algorhythms for the ASR series of samplers under the trade name "Waveboy" and among them was a device called the "Voder" which was based on the original Voder.   It used the lowest octave of the MIDI keyboard to impart vowels and consonants, and gave you the unique ability to create "vocal" parts using a MIDI sequencer without using audio.  Pretty neat thing it was...
