urgent help: restoration / remastering
« on: July 08, 2004, 01:22:18 PM »

Hi friends,
I have just organized/auditioned a 20 song CD compilation that soon is gonna become a "document CD" for museums, thaters, schools.

My client sent me CDs, old 1/2 tapes with all the problems possible. wow, flutter, some acetate masters poorly transferred to CD-R and or that old 1/4 tape. We endedp up with the less problematic wow/flutter tracks ( No Cedar here)  Sad

First I had to correct tuning. Most was under 442 HZ, so Serato Pitch in time helped me a lot with minimum artifacts. A conductor came here and we corrected that together.

so, some questions to you my gurus:

a)I am  really lost in which level must I "cut" this stuff, oncesome songs are  L1/L2 crappy mastered  from circa 1997, a few songs from acetate vynil, some old SW (short wave) radio  transmissions, a few songs will need some cleaning, de-crackling.

b) Dither: I generally use P-ower level 3, but based on Bob  and Brads comments, I do need to re-evaluate. So which do you guys mostly use for this kind of job? (OK, I might use ears)

c) Since it is a budget limited stuff, probably I will have to go with Waves Restoration Kit.
I cleaned just one song, the worst/noisiest in the compilation but  I really expected more from the waves package.  I will study it more.
What other tools would you recommend me? SOund forge? Sad  Sad

d) I have read that is advised to do gentle 2 passes with waves x-noise, x-hum insted of cascading everything with extreme settings. Any other tips?

Thanks in Advance

X noise is pretty nice, better than DINRR in my opinion. However, X-click and X-crackle ...

Alecio, if you would like to send some of them to me via either ftp or messenger, I would be happy to have a go at it (no charge of course) and let you know what I did and share the info..if it would help. We used to use one of the messingers a while back did we not? I have to hear it to employ the proper tools and settings and may need to go back to analog.

Let me know!

HI Bud!
MAny thanks for your kind attention as always!

I endeded up using Waves Restoration Kit.

I really enjoyed X-noise module but X-click and X-Crack just did not do the proper job.

There were too many horrible recordings circa 1950.

The material was seriously damaged, I think NO NOISE would be required to do a proper job, or the whole Sonic Soultions systems.

Some recordings were cut to acetate at that time and poorly transferred to some crappy, i mean very crappy digital system, as if it were injected into a soundblaster or similar.  Sad

I did all I could, processed with some Lexiverbs. There was nasty distortion everywhere, I had to use severe eqing, it was a big tiring job, pro tooling all the time.

Just about all of the restoration tools tend to be less successful than one might hope. On one hand they are a miracle but they also have a way of always seeming to come up short. On the other hand you can luck out and have them improve things dramatically.

The tools I hear the best things about consistently are the Cedar products. I suspect the best approach is to have them all to try.

Try Diamond Cut Audio DC6 from www.tracertek.com. It is way better than the Sonic Foundry noise reduction tools. It is magic what it can do with some problems.
