I need a sandbox to play in
« on: April 30, 2009, 06:42:29 PM »

I'm leaving the country for a few months, and while I'm gone I'd like to play with sound recording.
I'm not a skilled musician in the mechanical sense, but I can compose well with the right tools.

I have a PC laptop (dual core, 3gigs ram). I want to rec from my guitar pod and mic, and play with midi and loops.
I am trying to figure out if I should go with an M-Box 2 mini and Protools, or another solution.

I am also thinking of getting a Korg Nano keyboard and mixer.

Is Protools a good idea, or are there better options?

there are other, but not better, options

it's very much a personal decision

if you have a Strat, is a Les Paul a "better option"?

You'll be fine with Protools .One way you can to look at it is Protools is especially great for mixing , Some others , like Digital Performer. are especially  great for composing , but they all generally can be used to get things done .

PT 8, with the new virtual instrument and the MIDI, is as good as any other DAW for
mixing AND composing

PT8 shouldn't stop anyone from composing properly, but I still don't think it can claim to be as good for composing as Logic IMHO. I use both platforms. Again, it's totally good enough to get the job done nowadays anyway.
