Both capitalism and communism require faith in institutions. That faith in our capital institutions is betrayed, leaving nothing but government, which is us. We can call it communism but that term has been so poisoned in the US we might as well adapt to the newer term communitarianism or resurrect the old idea of the commons. The economy doesn't belong to a few people, it belongs to all of us. The minute the FDIC was required for people to have faith in putting their money into private institutions, we no longer had pure capitalism, we had a hybrid. Its that hybrid we have now. Nothing has changed except that the safety mechanisms have had to kick in, and they're overwhelmed by the scale of the incompetence and betrayal.
