First, I pretty much agree with MagnetoSound.

Second, I'm calling the Schoeps USA rep today, Hank, but if that falls through I'll take you up on your offer.

Third, another mic? Charter Oaks? Sounds like a rehab place. Okay, I'll try to dig one up.

Fourth, no one has volunteered from here to be on the listening panel. I'll take the first two who contact me. PM works fine.

Finally, Hank, you're from NoCal and come to Austin? I'm originally from Sonoma County. You should drop by some time anyway.

Hey Steve,

Charter Oak mics are no joke. The company may be under the radar, but I suggest you do a little research and check them out. They make great mikes and guarantee them for life. www.charteroakacoustics.com

I was laughing at Jasper's joke, not commenting on Charter Oak as a company or its products..

There used to be a big motorcycle club (gang?) in Connecticut called the Charter Oaks. Back in the day they wouldn't have taken kindly to people goofing on their name. I don't know if they're still around, but I bet the survivors have done a fair bit of rehab.  Very Happy

They're not that under the radar. Most of us have heard of the SA538 tube mic.

Also, there's this...

Just sayin'.

Mike,

I have been hauling a pair of CMC6's + Mk4's with me to Austin pretty regularly for the last year and a half. I will return to TX May 16 and be there through June 10. If you would like to try these mics just holler and we can get arrange that.

Just want to tell you that Hank came through on his promise. We met Sunday and did the test. Great guy.

Okay, here's the final mic tally. Got to test 92 mics.

It should be an interesting article. Meaningful? Hell, I don't know, but worth the paper it's written on at least.

Hey Jasper, that Beyer omni I brought over is a 101. The 201 is the cardioid version IIRC.

It's moot anyway. I've decided to skip the dynamics.

And Barry and Wittman are right, this article isn't going to help anyone here. You guys have heard most of these anyway. But I did get some good input from a lot of you, and I appreciate it. But there won't be anymore follow-up posts from me on this. The article will be out in July. Allegedly.

Thanks for the help,

Jasper

Mike,

You are considering omni mics from Schoeps and Neumann, not from B&K-DPA? DPA 4006, which many consider as THE omni SDC, seems being a mandatory addition to your list. The Josephson C617 is not so widely acknowledged but would be as good, if not better.

Right.
If you cnsider the DPA 4006 you always also have to hear the Josephson C617SET.

But.
I can´t imagine to test 92 microphones. Comparing 5 microphones for a special situations is enough for me. And in another situation the 5 mics can compare very differently.
