Phase issues with EQ
« on: July 06, 2004, 09:32:46 AM »

When mixing individual tracks and using EQ selectively, what can you do to avoid phase issues in the final mix, or is the issue found only on stereo tracks that are EQ'ed? I'm trying to learn what not to do to cause a problem.

Thanks

Elliot,

Why do you think phase causes "issues" at all?

Have a look at the two EQ/Phase articles, seventh in the list on my Articles page:

The first thing you can do is stop worrying about "phase issues" in equalization.  Providing, of course, you don't mean latency/comb filtering type of troubles.

There is a great deal of misinformation out there wrt "phase shift" in eq's, imo.  Sure you can buy systems with zero phase shift, but they are not _necessarily_ better.

And remember that all analog eq's have phase distortion, it's part of the charm, vibe, ethos, etc.  The imperfection might even be preferable to the "phase perfect" model.

Yep, I misunderstood how phase works in EQ. Thanks for the info.

I'd look towards changing mic placement during tracking if you are having issues with a track and not your eq's.
