API A2D Vs. 312
« on: March 24, 2009, 10:07:01 AM »

has anyone done a shootout between an API A2D and a regular 312 - just to compare the sound of the pre's?  i know they are supposed to be the same pre, but i swear they sound different and i've had a number of people tell me they do.

It would not surprise me if the output transformers are different, given the "new" option of a second set of taps in the A2D.

I've only put the A2D up against the 312's in my 1608. The ones in the 1608 are by far the best sounding API pres I've used. What always seemed like a lack of body (coming from working on a neve 5316) begins to sound more like clarity and depth in the board pres. The A2D wasn't particularly impressive to me, with or without the conversion.
