micing pan flute
« on: July 04, 2004, 02:08:35 PM »

had a session with a Peruvian singer who uses
pan flute a lot.ended up using a Shure
KSM32 on both vocals and flute at about two feet
distance.it worked alright but not entirely...lower
notes come out nicely but upper ones tend to get
a bit "stingy",if you know what i mean...
any suggestions about choice of mic and placement?
thank you in advance,

If the room is nice, switch to an omni in about the same position or a little closer.

Here’s a good one for ya: I live in Vegas and a few years ago I got a call from a guy that wanted to record some VO that he could run from a minidisk in his show. I took the gig and when he came over, turns out he’s a ventriloquist. Yikes! I never could get a sound that was right, to my ears anyway. I think I might have even put the mic in front of the dummy. I can’t remember how it ended up, but I sent him  out the door with something. Anyway, awkward session….
