Bogus Bookings/Attempted Robbery
« on: March 04, 2009, 06:19:58 AM »

Hi, I've just been dealing with a group of people wanting to book the studio but don't need an engineer, just the accomodation and emphasise "not being disturbed".

I thought this all fine until they're myspace was just a picture of a guy from the back with no friends and no music posted. This roused my suspicions and I asked a couple of probing questions like "where have you been before? and what is your music like?" and they've gone remarkably quiet.

it's only been about 5 days so I could be wrong and anyway where do people unload studio gear?

has anyone come accross stuff like this?

Sounds suspicious to me.

Do not leave your place unattended if they are there.

In fact, add security.

I would pass on this one, and be sure you have a good alarm system anyway.

Thanks for that, I will leave this one I think.

Who was it said "it's better to loose a client than loose your desk"?

But be aware that "they" now know you, who you are, where you are.

Take normal precautions anyway!

Well needless to say they haven't got back to me.

As for knowing where I am quite a few of my clients can't even find me which I suppose has worked in my favour for once.

Do organised criminals have sat nav?

Probably eh?

I think that was Sir Winston.

Yes, I think so along with "never, in the process of recording, have so many channels been used for so few"

Do not take those clients man.

Tell them u are busy.

I got robbed the other day at gun point in my studio (thank God they only wanted money).

They called in to book a rehearsal room, they went in the rehearsal room and when they came out, they were armed.  Everything went wrong for them, one of them got caught, 8 years in prison.

Not nice.

Less than a week and a half later, somebody broke in the studio from the kitchen window.  Again, money.  They took 30 bucks from the cash box.  Ridiculous.

Take precautions.  Install any alarm system if you dont have it, place cameras with a recording hard drive and always look around when coming in/out of the place.  If you have any windows, install iron bars.  We did.

Things here in Panama are nuts.  Today somebody tried to break in where the mastering engineer lives and fortunately one of his room mates was in the apartment at the time and got to scare the guy off somehow.

Be careful man.  Thieves have no conscience.  They will do anything to get their plan across.

Good luck,
Nacho

As Nacho is a personal friend, I think it is VERY GOOD that this ended as well as it did!

Be careful, everyone!
