Ah geez, this could be a long one, but I'll be short and to the point because your questions are not very specific.
All acoustic problems are caused by reflections. Modal ringing, skewed response, flutter echo, excess reverb - all of it.
What treatments are effective depends on the frequencies and what you need. Absorption always works, but diffusion is sometimes a better choice. For example, diffusion can reduce flutter echo and comb filtering without removing energy from the room. With "porous" absorption like rigid fiberglass, the thicker it is, the lower in frequency it absorbs to.
Acoustic interference causes peaks and nulls at predictable frequencies based on the distances. Room modes are a subset of interference and happen at only those frequencies related to the spacing between two opposing boundaries. Versus acoustic interference that can happen outdoors with a single boundary such as a large brick wall.
