exciting local bands
« on: July 01, 2004, 01:22:19 PM »

Hey-

what are some cool local bands in your area, or even not in your area that you've heard of/ think other people should check out?

Here in Chicago my friend Devin has put together a terrific new album, but hasn't found a label for it yet but he is someone who you should check out www.devindaviswebsite.com a friend of mine also told me about a guy named Mark Mallman from Minnesota who i've been digging as well: www.mallman.com

any reccomendations from the groop? Websites with MP3 samples perhaps? I am just amazed by all the great local talent that is out there that is maybe only ever heard by people in that area.

I'm on Long Island, but my buds from Brooklyn have a band called Nakatomi Plaza.  If you like your punk/hardcore jazz tinged, definitely check them out.  Great stuff.

Colorado has a pretty underrated scene...

Punk(ish):
-The Gamits (some of the best pop-punk *real pop punk* around)
-Laymen Terms (Really heavy, dynamic, lot's of styles)
-All/Descendents (do they count as local?) Smile
-Armchair Martian (Kind of Social D with a country tinge)

Indie:
-Against Tomorrow's Sky (not sure how they're not recognized on a national level, a really talented band with a really great album--this forum would love them)

Alt Country:
-Drag the River (not really my thing, but very good)

Hardcore:
-The Great Redneck Hope (Whoa! is all I could say after seeing them, they give spastic rock a new meaning)
-Planes Mistaken for Stars (does that count either?)

Hands down, most talented and exciting band:
-Leer43

Rock-solid power trio with a style of their own and quite possibly the best singer I have EVER heard.  Covers every register flawlessly--great guitar player too.  They are planning an album for later this year that I think will do well independently.  Their only downfall is the lack of website, online/magazine advertisement, and other forms of promotion that indie/punk bands have a firm grasp of.  I'd expect a lot of this to change in the near future...

i dunno if i've raved about them here, but call me lightning is amazing.

http://www.callmelightning.com

they're from milwaukee and are signed to revelation - except they're not hardcore crap.  they did 1/2 of the record at key club with bill skibbe - it comes out in the fall. if they're ever touring near you - see them, amazing live.  totally tight, ass kicking, funny and fun.

hmmm. in chicago i really like:

haymarket riot - http://www.divotrecords.com/haymarket
the dutchmen - http://thedutchmen.com/
bang! bang! - http://bangbangband.com/
pelican - http://www.hydrahead.com/pelican/
cougars - http://www.cougarsrock.com
gasoline fight - http://gasolinefight.com
mt. st. helens - http://mountsaint.com/

testtone - i checked out that devin davis - it's pretty cool. he should hook up with may or may not - similar vein stuff that i recorded... http://www.mayormaynot.org

with love from dallas/denton texas comes centro-matic and their side project south san gabriel. they are finally getting the national coverage (haha the editors of maxim are listening to it) i like to call it neo-americana because i hate the term alt country, plus centro-matic rocks just a little more than usual.

but if you want the slower more beautiful indie altcountry then i'd go with pleasant grove.

[daryl] is good, think the lead singer of archers of loaf/crooked fingers singing in a new wave band mixed with some texas rock.

and the spree(of the polyphonic variety) always makes for an interesting show... you can't go anywhere in downtown dallas without running into the members...

Here in South Florida we have a few that are worth mentioning...

El (formerly known as Sevens)- My last project I worked on has the most exciting material around. I think my favorite stuff is the songs we haven't recorded yet. www.elband.com

Legends of Rodeo- was dropped by Bieler Bros./MCA last year and is sitting on about 50 or 60 completed demos ready for new album with no budget. Constantly changing sound-every record.

--Chicago area check out Matthew- Brian McSweeney's vocals some of the best ever ala Jeff Buckley/Michael English.

--Orlando- the Kick (w/out the s) believe it or not they had the name first and are really getting screwed. Think the Who, Petty, Pearl Jam, all rolled into one.
