I was given 2 Groove Tube Model One mics and a 4 channel PS1 power supply. These mics I want to use at home for my demos. They were free and I don't have to bring mics home from the studio so I would like to get these mics to function without a giant hiss, it is driving me up the wall!

are these worth spending money on to modify.fix the hiss problem?

I have plenty of great  mics at the studio, I just have these at home and would like to be able to use them around my home studio since I have them. They actually sound decent aside from the HISS.

any suggestions?

Don't know those mics but I'd certainly get my GT44s fixed if they had issues.  Use them nearly every day-- very quiet, too.

Sounds like it might be a gain staging problem.  With the hiss turned down, how loud is the signal?

Yeah... we need more info.

What are you plugging the mics into at your home setup?  How does that differ from your studio?

Can you take the mics to your "real" studio to verify they are good or bad?

Could be other things downstream from the mic causing the hiss - give some details.

Sort of Related: Does anyone have schematics for GT44's or their power supplies?

Hey Alan-

80% chance it's the power transformer in the supply.  They are mounted in such a way that there is considerable tension on the plastic standoffs that hold the xformer over the pcb.  GT sent me new xformers a while ago after I sent two supplies back to them to get serviced only to return with transformers broken in shipping.  Crappy ps design, great sounding mics!

Give a call if you need... it will be very obvious if you look inside the ps, one or both sides of the transformer's plastic sides will be cracked or broken away from the body of the xformer.

The Model Ones are bound to be old enough that they need new tubes.

My Model 3 (a pretty wonderful mic) developed a sudden, terrible hiss ... until I replaced the tube.
That model takes a GT-6201-M.
I don't know what's in the Model One.
Good luck. The mics are certainly worth gambling the cost of the tubes.

BTW, the Model 3 has something to do with Josephsen. And the late Dave Baskind had a hand in the whole series. These early GT mics have little to do with anything issued since the buyout.
