I've heard tales that they recorded the bass harmonica in an empty swimming pool. Anybody know if there's anything to that?

He definitely did record some parts in an empty swimming pool ("Heroes and Villains" comes to mind), but I THINK the bass harmonica was done in the studio.
I had one on the fade out section of "Trashy Dog."

The swimming pool recording was later. Pet Sounds was Western, Sunset Sound, Columbia and Gold Star.
