Personally, I feel like a big A-Hole for doing a mix and no crit on the last one. That's the first time since I started that I did that, but I still feel guilty. I think a lot of guys did like me and dropped the ball. For the first time, I was actually swamped. But not too swamped to do a mix, soooo...

The last IMP I participated in had so many people, I barely got half-way through reviews before I lost perspective and started typing gibberish.

Perhaps it would be good to assign each participant say, five other participants whose mixes they have to review - kind of like drawing family members' names for Christmas gifts.  It would keep the mundane workload to a minimum, and (hopefully) would promote more in-depth criticism of the mixes.

Last time was not very good, as J-T said a number of people did not submit their observations.

But...  I take that as an exception, and would not want to change the 'format' unless it starts to happen more frequently.

Yes, I do feel a bit tiring and hard to keep perspective with a big number of mixes, but if that's the price for admission I'm OK with it.

I think, the crits are way less important than just working the tracks. This is a way for folks to get more time in the chair, and on wildly varied material. That's the real value.

If you get some sage advice from someone who's mix you like, then that's a bonus. The real trick is learning to trust your own choices.

So, yeah-- five would be more reasonable.

Cool!

I vote for keeping the format the same.

... and I mus apologize for not getting my crits completed last time. I know that some put some good time and effort into completing their crits. I should have done it.

Cheers,

i'm itching to do some hard rock.

probably because i'm working a pretty mellow project right now, only to bounce to another mellow project after that.

So, what will it be?
And When?
IMP is a great project, it would be sad to drop it at number 20, isn't it?

I've been organizing the WUMP, the mastering engineer's IMP, and I think we've found a good form.

Everyone can sign up for the WUMP and if we have more than 15 participants we'll split up in groups for the commenting part. Listening to 30+ tracks is daunting but 9 to 15 tracks to comment is good to do, it'll take you an hour.

We're having one every three months, time enough for everyone to master, comment, post their tech notes and get hungry for another one  Very Happy

J. if you're too busy you should get someone else to organize it, I'm sure you'll find some volunteers over here. Initiatives like IMP and WUMP are of great value if you want to improve yourself.

i'm not too busy to tell people a file is uploaded and ready.  i am too busy to participate which really bothers me.  the entire point (at least to me) was to be active in this process.

i haven't done the last few.

my second problem is i haven't had much time to find another track to use.  i'd like to do another hard rock track as i feel like hard rock is the hardest genre to mix well.

i just need a song, and i haven't done squat to find one.

sorry guys, i'll try to make this happen.  it won't be this week as i'm over booked as it is.

at least the three projects i'm doing this week RULE!  nothing like working long days on something you hate.

If it's an option I could probably fish out an old session to use for an IMP.  I'm not sure how much prep needs to go into it, or if any of the bands are good enough that you guys actually wanna listen to the tracks.  Plus they'd be fixer-uppers... lots of 57s through mbox preamps with questionable mic positioning in bad sounding basements and the such... haha

Most of the stuff I have been doing lately is kind of "Power Pop" girl band type stuff... But if your interested in punky chick stuff I think I could probably swing something.  I have to check with the artists etc of course. Let me know if it interests you guys.

The only downside for me is that I have already mixed it, and I dig doing the IMPs cuz it's always something outside of my comfy zone...

Damn!  I just got permission from the girls for using their girl-band/punk/pop ... Sorry it took so long.

I have the rar on my desktop ready to upload... I'll stand by in case there's a change of plans, or if you want it for the next one.

They were stoked.

Lets use it next time for sure
