Lucas Deceiver
« on: January 30, 2009, 07:56:38 PM »

Ok, I've just gotta write this...even if it makes me look like a complete suck-up and pimp for all things Lucas/Manning etc.

When Terry and I were discussing the purchase of 3 CS-1 mics, I mentioned to him that we would LOVE to have a Deceiver. It just looked like a great idea to me. 2 guitar inputs, each with 4 possible outputs. Impedance matching, flippable ground and phase.

...cool.

I work by myself a lot here. No "tea boy", intern, second eng. around most of the time to re-patch another amp in the studio while I fart around with mutes and channel selections blah blah blah. This thing FIXED that problem. I can put up 4 amps/4 mics, plug the guitar hero into the Deceiver in the control room and instantly select from those amp setups with no signal loss/loading issues. Fabulous. Simple. Well implemented idea and you should bug the daylights out of Terry Manning until he sells you one.

Seriously.

I'm thankful that there's a well seasoned, technically savvy music recordist out there that has enough sense to DO SOMETHING about the common everyday problems this job presents. Good tool for the kit.

Thanks, Terry and Frank.

David, in my first-ever post on The Acid Test, I thank you.

The invention of The Deceiver is twenty years old next month...I can't believe they grow up so fast.

It seems just yesterday it was running around the studio in diapers (nappies).

It is on my list to get at least one unless one will do. However I'm only fortunate enough for one CS-1 as things stand. A tree of them CS-1s?

Anyhoo, can that Deciever box run 2 seperate inputs at the same time, like 1 guitar into Deciever, to desired outs, and 1 bass into Deciever, to desired outs?

Thanks

Hey Adam,

Yes, The Deceiver has two totally separate channels, so you have two sets of "one-in, four-out" setups.

You can do two different things at once, or you can run one of the outs from Channel 1 into the input of Channel 2, thereby having "one-in to seven-outs."

Ooops. Forgot to mention the mute switches. This evening, we had guitar in the control room, pedal board, out from the Deceiver to an Orange 120 in a booth and Leslie 147 in the studio. So easy...it makes me feel lazy.

Mine took about ten days.  Last month.

Second the OP's assessment.  Makes multi-amping effortless, leaves your tone happy, allows long instrument cables out to combo amps in the extremities of your recording space.  Using it daily.

Wait time for the order?  About a month from the time it was placed to the time it hit my studio door. I don't know if they're built to order or kept in stock and ready to go.

This depends, of course, upon whether we have a bunch made up or not.

We are making so many compressors, EQ's, and mic preamps that we only do The Deceiver at certain intervals.

Numbers are very low now, and we may not get around to making another batch for 2-3 months or more.

Nothing Lucas is just "kept in stock."

Thanks.

It's in use this very moment.

Wow, that looks like one of the very first units, even before we made them rack mount and mains powered.

That might be powered by a battery, and is possibly as much as 17 years old.

According to Frank, it's from about 1991, and it runs on 12V DC.
It has outgrown its nappies, but it still has accidents.
Umm...

Nevermind.

So how much do these cost and where do I buy one?

Also, is there a cut-down version?

The Deceiver is $795. You order any of our products by email...

lucaseng at aol dot com

There are none available right now, and it may be 2-3 months or more before we are able to make any more (very heavy workload making compressors and EQ's).

As for a "cut down" version, it is possible to make any specialised version. We have made some pretty individualised units.

Thanks.
