How to increase auto sales...
« on: December 15, 2008, 12:33:27 AM »

Since this last Thursday the Brazilian government reduced federal taxes on new cars; small-engined cars had the tax reduced to zero, and midsize-engined cars had the tax cut in half. Large engines did not receive tax breaks.

Reports from dealers this weekend pointed to sale increases of up to 20% over the last 6-weekend average, dominated by a 55% prevalence of small-engined cars.

fifty US state governments, with 50 different car tax schemes.

It's difficult for the US government to change this.

That could be an idea. I mentioned in a thread here before, that the gov't should tax the gas guzzlers--V6's, V8's. A very large inefficient V8--if someone's driving it to and from work--should really only be available to the elite who can afford something extravagant and not practical.

Obama's got a bit of political capitol right now. If he "asked" the Governors to do this it could happen. If the cars aren't selling they're not getting much revenue anywho.

You're lucky!

Here we have both Federal and State tax on new vehicles.
And state tax is twice the amount of the fed tax...

Ok, here's an idea that takes into consideration what you pointed out above:

- reduce state taxes on sales of new vehicles

- reduce income tax for dealerships, exclusively on income from new car sales.

For a limited period (a year?), renewable if the results are good.

States that do not reduce taxes will see people buying cars across the state lines, with the exception of states that have special emissions requirements.

To be honest, most car salesmen are lower than pond scum. And the larger dealerships encourage the typical salesguy behavior. You really need to gird for battle when you enter the showroom.

I mean, if Jim Click (huge dealer here in southern Arizona) went bankrupt tomorrow, I would cheer loudly.

So any special treatment for those fucks is unwarranted and undeserved. Let 'em fail.
