STC confusion
« on: December 10, 2008, 12:42:42 PM »

Hi guys,

I'm in the process of converting a garage to a mix room and we've determined that one of the interior 2x6 walls will be facing the inside of a garage door (we're framing inside the door perimeter). This is not a "watertight" membrane and even with silicone sealant the door has glass windows in the door so exposed drywall is not a good idea for mold and mildew purposes.

More to the point. Instead of using 5/8 drywall on the "outside" of this wall we thought about using 1/2" OSB and painting over it. My concern is that the STC of 1/2" OSB may not meet that of 5/8" drywall. I can't find anything on the Net one way or the other to clarify this for me. Would the STC ratings be sufficient enough using JUST 1/2" OSB on the outside facing wall or do we need to add another layer of 1/2" drywall underneath the OSB for better reduction purposes?

The real problem we have with double layers on this outside facing wall (1/2" drywall and OSB) is that it will be awfully heavy to lift into place once the wall is done. The contractor and I are trying to determine a smarter solution. I'm open to ideas...removal of the door is not an option though.

hi there,

You have some information here...

http://irc.nrc-cnrc.gc.ca/pubs/fulltext/nrcc45018/nrcc45018. pdf

It's not quite conclusive what will happen in your situation but densities of both materials are not that different, maybe you will have -2 dB difference regarding STC.. which is not that relevant for studio recording since we are worried with low frequencies and another main aspect is the size of the air cavity

I'm not sure if this is the full report or part of a full report that is located in another document.

Maybe the other Andre from Canada (avare) knows which NRC data has the information you are looking for !

Figure 7 in the document you referenced I think answers the OP's question.  The document you refenced appears to based on some additional data after the publication of IR 832.    Although not identical to what the OP is asking about, figure 19 confirms that the difference is not significant.
