Cost is a factor at this time, but I want great sounding and
versitile preamps to compliment my slowly growing mic locker, and the Daking Mic Pre IV is a few hundred less than an API 3124...and a few hundred more less than a 4 channel John Hardy M2...and many many hundreds less than a 4 channel NPNG. So anyone here with anything positive or negative to say about the Daking pres? Are they a clone of something old? What? I put Daking into the search engine here and got back only a brief advert on a single channel Daking preamp...err something like that.

Daking stuff is great.  versatile.  sounds good.  works good.  etc, etc etc.

i guess i'm slightly more into my API stuff but i'd have no problem working at a studio with only Daking preamps.

I sold my Dakings to buy my 16 APIs and missed the Dakings immediately.

APIs are great, Dakings are great in a slightly different way.

Thank you Jonathan very much for your input on the subject. So Daking sounds considerably different than the API that you prefer, but still sounds good? That is something I am interested in aswell...something of a different sound signature, but very respectable to the ears; without breaking my bank. Saving a few hundred for stands and cables is also a help. Thanks again.

Anyone else with input on the Daking stuff please chime in too?

I wish the (A) shop carried Daking...I feel guilty having to deal with the (B) & or (C) shop; and (D) shop who will tell you a $49.00 mic preamp sounds amazing, but they have this other thing I want, but they are obviously just gear pimps.

I don't know what kind of work you do, but I've started to realize the sense of what William Wittman is always going on about regarding using the same pre on everything.  The last couple projects I have done I've only used 312/512s for basics and all the overdubs, and things really do hang together better come mix time.

That said, any of the pres mentioned above would probably work well in this scenario.

To me, it seems like the peaks on the Daking are a little more "rounded", by comparison the API peaks were "sharper", slightly more precise. I liked the Daking sound.

The top end on the Daking sounds smooth, but in that regard the API and Daking were close.

Regarding API's. I have read (gearslutz I think) sometime back that the API 312/512's ought to have a 1200 ohm resistor on the output to make them sound more like the pres sound in the consoles. This remedies some of the smoothness issues people have with API modules in a lunchbox or rack. Don't know, don't have any to try it on. Anyway, FYI.
