compressor purchase and use
« on: November 08, 2008, 03:13:28 PM »

I have about $2000 to spend on a compressor. I record mostly acoustic instruments and sometimes vocals.

1) Looking for suggestions on a 2 channel compressor to multitask on vocals and instruments.

2) How much compressing do you normally do before the mastering stage?

3) Would I be able to use the same compressor suggested, to do mastering?

Thanks,

Jim Easton

If you can add a little to your budget a Pendulum OCL-2 is exactly what you are looking for IMO.

1) Agreed, I'd pick it up just a whisker if you can.  A whole bunch of used units would fall into the $2500-ish area.

2) As much as necessary (which is generally as little as possible).

3) Depends...?  It's a pretty vague quesiton...

The API 2500 is as close as you'll get.  You could probably find it new for around $2,300 or used for a little less.

PS - I should add that the Waves version of the API 2500 is pretty darn good.  It's what I'm using until I can afford a Crane Song STC-8.

what he said....but for no.2   be very very very careful with compression on the mix. i'd use a ratio of 1.1:1 maybe 1.2:1 if i was feeling brave.  basicly....do what you think...then back it off.

my favourite compressor at the moment is the junger accent 2. digital i know,...but very very nice, and no mucking about with too many parameters...failing that i use tape compression (preferred)
