Yorkville YSM1P-II's Anyone ?
« on: October 22, 2008, 08:12:24 PM »

I used the YSM1's for years and sold them to buy the Wackies. I regret that move. I haven't used the Mackies for ages, but, I'd like to get a second "B" set of reference monitors and, you know, these YSM's were unbeatable for the price.

Anyone using them ?

Oh ! Here's the web site :

Wow, I thought I was the only person in the world who used YSM-1, the original wood unpowered ones. I still do and would NEVER ditch them.

When they went to Powered versions, it seemed like to many variables changed. I'd be interested in how the ver2 sound too.

I suggest try'n to find some of the originals YSM-1.  for a couple hundred each, thats pretty cheap.

Hey, hey Tim :

It's been a long time. How's the Mix Posse thing going ?

I had the original YSM's side by side with the Mackies for quite a while (before I sold the YSM's) and a/b'ing over and over, I could not get over it, especially considering price, there was no advantage that the Mackies had over the YSM's except for a beefier bass.

I've got the B&W Matrix 802's Series 3's now and they are just amazing, but, a second set of monitors would be a refresher.

I had a pair of the YSM1- revised version, bought after a couple of friend's I was doing work with had bought pairs of the first version. I thought the first version was pretty good for the price (and I have lots of experience with hi end speakers so I have some refrence point)but was underwhelmed with the second version. I even took them over to one of the aforementioned friend's place and did a comparison. The older ones (with the wooden box)were more clear on top, less congested in the middle and imaged much better. The newer ones had a very small amount of extra low end but not enough to be offset by the better qualities of the earlier version. I would go after the earlier version for sure.

Greg, I'd like to be clear on which newer version you're talking about.

The YSM1's were the original.
The next version was the YSM1i-Passive Updated version.
After that the YSM1P-Powered Version.

The "latest" version of the YSM's is the YSM1P-II's. They are also powered monitors.

Another happy YSM1P user here. I don't really have anything to compare them to, but I'm quite happy with these guys and don't see myself parting with them any time soon.

Don't have any experience with the YSM1P-II's though.

I have the original wood box ones, I am the original owner too, I happen to be working at a pro audio store when they were released in the early 90s, we sat them next to all the studio standards and highends at the time and we were all amazed at them.

I have had others monitors here sitting next to these and they always are hyped in some area of freq.

When Yorkville went to the plastic boxes, I remember thinking "hey, don't mess with the formula"

Sorry about that, I wasn't very clear- the ones I bought were the YSM1i's (couldn't remember the exact designation when I wrote that yesterday).

I do think the originals were an excellent value, certainly one of the best sub $300 monitors out there. Hopefully the II's are better than the original updated versions (not that the updated ones were terrible, just not as good as the first version).

According to their web site, the boxes are 3/4" MDF :

The rock-solid YSM1P Series Two is constructed of 3/4-inch MDF cabinet and baffle with heavy internal bracing and ample internal dampening material to reduce unwanted low frequency rumble. The YSM1P Series Two reproduces source material with near pinpoint accuracy and detail, making it perfect for today’s high quality wide frequency response recordings.

Thank-goodness.
