Which preamp for AK47 Telefunken RTF mic?
« on: October 21, 2008, 09:40:09 PM »

I was wondering if anyone has had experience using the AK47 Telefunken RTF mic.

I'd be very interested to know which preamps are recommended as a great match for this particular microphone.

-
Application: male vocal ( mine ) in pop music and/or classical musical genres.

I've chosen the AK47 mic because I love how it sounds with my voice, nothing edgy to it at all, it seems to smooth out the things I didn't like to hear.

I've been using a 737 Avalon ( got it because I love Lisa Gerrard's vocals and this is what she uses. ).  I like the 737 because it doesn't seem to alter the sound much.  But I feel like I'm missing something, a presence or something that I think another pre will give me.  I believe a Solid State sound might be a better choice for me.

Any recommendations?

-
Budget: up to $2000.   Less is better!

Here's what I've listened to so far:

Portico:  too coloured for my application
Millenia:  seemed too clean for my application
Great River:  I didn't like the 'forwardness' of this pre at all
A-designs Pacifica: a bit too saturated and too bright for me
UA 610:  nice but there was a little bit of an edge I believe

Any recommendations from those who have used or know the mic well?

Thanks in advance
Paul Gasztold

I've got an AK-47 too...I haven't picked up
my preamp for it either...but your saying yada
preamp is too colored...bada preamp is too
edgy...wada preamp is too clean...and the
other one is too forward. You might be SOL,
but have you tried an M5 or an 8300, or
an NPNG? I have none of those, but I think
thats all there is left...just kidding....
but seriously...you might consider an MSS10.
But hope someone can help if I haven't.

With all the settings available on the Great River I can't see how it would't work for you. Did you spend much time with it??

Suggestion: Try a Gordon Model 4.

Comment: I, too, have difficulty aligning my experience of the Great River NV with your remark. Yeah, maybe we all hear differently, but that is one very flexible preamp.

Hi Paul,

Have you had a chance to demo an API or a Daking?

I think that the API will be to forward for you also.

Try a Helios reissue

i think the Avalon is pretty jive.

i think the Portico, Millenia, and Great River are all wonderful preamps.  i've not heard the A-designs but have heard very good things from friends.  the UA i think is pretty lame.

but really-

you're trying so many preamps and you aren't totally happy.

maybe the mic isn't the right mic for you.

There have been some very good suggestions, so far.  As a point of disclosure, I have not tried the Telefunken AK47, so I can not give any advise concerning that microphone.

Concerning microphone pres, you might want to try/rent a few channels of John Hardy's pre.  It is not clinical and also not overly colored which seems to be the balance you seek.

I am wondering if a high quality analog EQ or compressor might help you get the rest of the way.  You have experience with a broad range of very high quality pre-amps which I would expect to provide excellent results.

I recently used that mic for male vocals.
It was very good with a john hardy m1.
Also used it via 1 ch of a cranesong spider. That was really good.
Hope it helps.

I really like it with the Daking single channel with the HP, and I'm using Accusound Silver cables.

whatever high quality mic pre, in the desk preferably, that you are recording the entire rest of the record through.

the mic, the genre have NO bearing on mic pre selection

Which pre did you employ to draw this conclusion??

I'm not familiar with the mic you are using but... perhaps you're using it wrong?  Each of those pres you listed should work just fine.

ADDED:  +1 (2?) for the Hardy M1.

if you like the Avalon but you feel it's just "missing something, a presence or something..."

perhaps the simplest, best answer is +1 at 10k with a shelf? instead of another expensive mic pre

what basis do you have for this 'belief'?
