I spent $3500.00 on a complete VS-1680 system back in '96 or '97. That included the unit, case, 2 FX cards and an external cd burner (since they were still having trouble getting the internal ones to work properly). I saw several on sale at Sweetwater's Trading Post for $250.00.
I don't feel bad about the purchase. That 1680/880 rigg earned me enough to buy my DA7 & Nuendo rigg, and I'm still using the 1680 for some of the FX or recording rehearsals.
I thought about spending the $4.5K for a complete VS-2480 kit to do remotes. But I'm so sick of their proprietary B.S., which FORCES you to buy all kinds of unneccesary interfaces just to make your other gear talk to it. So I'm actually thinking now of just buying a second 1680 and a pair of Millenia HV-3's or True Precision 8 channel pres and call it a day.
Drew's right about it just being the cost of doing business. My DA7/Nuendo rigg paid for itself with ONE national commercial. So, I don't have any real complaints about the money I spent. I'm just complaining about the money I NEED to buy the newer gear!
