I had something similar in 1996. being very off topic... IOmega JAZ drives A P.i.t.a
But as life teaches, regarding digital media, if it is not in two different places, it might not exist at any time. Very Happy

In 1980 my Studer cost about 100K today probably about 5K. 15 Years ago I have a Sound Tools system and a Mac II FX (the most expensive Mac ever). I paid over 15K (Plus a 3k for a 650 MB drive). My Mac 512 K cost me $2500.00 but if your billing clients 1k per day it's all relative. Digi is pretty good offering trades I do  not see any trades on Apple.com for my B&W G3 that's about the same age as my Mix system.

Yes, Reason 01> Wild marketing, advertisement.

I spent $3500.00 on a complete VS-1680 system back in '96 or '97. That included the unit, case, 2 FX cards and an external cd burner (since they were still having trouble getting the internal ones to work properly). I saw several on sale at Sweetwater's Trading Post for $250.00. Shocked

I don't feel bad about the purchase. That 1680/880 rigg earned me enough to buy my DA7 & Nuendo rigg, and I'm still using the 1680 for some of the FX or recording rehearsals.

I thought about spending the $4.5K for a complete VS-2480 kit to do remotes. But I'm so sick of their proprietary B.S., which FORCES you to buy all kinds of unneccesary interfaces just to make your other gear talk to it. So I'm actually thinking now of just buying a second 1680 and a pair of Millenia HV-3's or True Precision 8 channel pres and call it a day.

Drew's right about it just being the cost of doing business. My DA7/Nuendo rigg paid for itself with ONE national commercial. So, I don't have any real complaints about the money I spent. I'm just complaining about the money I NEED to buy the newer gear! Laughing

Life goes on...

The presentations that I've been doing recently include an illustration (based on Ray Kurzweil's data) of how quickly technology is evolving these days: pretty much a doubling (or halving) even 1.1 years.  Which means that in approximately 3 years what you've paid x for is going to be worth 1/(2^3) or x/8.

So I shouldn't be surprised, although I am somewhat chagrined, when the OXF R3 that we paid approx $300,000 for three & 1/2 years ago is worth less than $50,000 today.

interesting "equation". I was thinking the very same thing yesterday.
Here in Brazil a 60GB MAxtor in 2002 cost U$100. Now with the same U$100 one can  buy a 120GB model.
So seems PT Mix systems has yet to lose more value soon!

Can anybody explain to me why updates and/or upgrades constantly render the older versions useless? Why won't OSX support plugs written on OS9, so people don't lose their investment.

Same for Nuendo 2.0. Why take away stuff users really liked and USED all the time and replace it with things they don't want or don't work as well? Then users have to run 2 versions of Nuendo, 1.6 AND 2.0 to utilze a "Best Case Scenario." Why isn't the new inclusive of the old?

It's called "planned obsolescence" and it is particularly annoying. The manufacturers have us by the balls, literally. I do recognize their side, and they are trying to make up for their development costs, but considering the number and quantity of people who have to do an upgrade like this, the pricing should be reconsidered, in my opinion. How many users of the plugins are they, multiplied by the upgrade cost?

I spend thousands of dollars a year on revisions that are caused by other people's revisions. A major OS revision creates such a trickle down it isn't funny to us users. What would be a fair price for an upgrade?

HI, Mr.Bob
I amm with you on this.
I am soon going on Accel direction and upgrading plugs again is really freezing me. Sad
Even worser, what if some company like Waves, MCDSP goes bankrupt and closes the door? buying plugs is really no big deal. Probably this rental idea shall do fine for some specific projects.
Nice weekend to all
