Are you going to record anything in stereo that you'll want compression on?  Overheads?  Piano?  Room?  You don't need compression, but it may be a characteristic that you want.

I would recommend getting two mono compressors (Distressors come to mind) at this time. If you're mainly tracking it might be better to concentrate on that part. You can always link them if you so desire. I rarely use the linking function even on my stereo buss compressor (STC-8).

Michael, what is it about distressors that you like so much?  I have a few friends who are very enamoured with them, but given the choice between a distressor and an 1176LN, I'll always pick the Urei.  I'm just curious why people who do love them love them.

Yeah Michael
I have some mono comps
1176 clone
pair of dbx 160 vu's
summit tla 50 tube
symetrix cl50
alessis smashup

I guess my question should be what attributes/functions should be looked for in a good 2 bus comp? can any of the above have a mix run thru it and perform the same function [in mono of course]

I think eventually i may mix for some lower budget projects that come through here..but for now tracking is the game..

A pair of trakkers or distressors can be a great tracking pair that can be used on the 2buss. I don't really dig the Distressors there and the Trakkers aren't as featured for this as the STC-8 but I beleive everyone needs a pair or four...
