The best cheap mix compressor has got to be the SPL Dynamaxx. It blows away an SSL and many other more expensive compressors I own.

It's also one of the best compressors for drums.

Questions like this are tough when I don't know what your standards of quality are.  I recently ran a mix through a Presonus Blue Max and was very impressed with the improvement it made.  Overall, I'm not impressed with that device, but it really did a good job in that application. That's cheap.  I've seen good reports regarding an FMR RNC on the 2 bus, but haven't experiemented myself.  In the past I've slapped a pair of Joe Meek VC6Q across the 2 and gotten dramatic improvement.

I'm not comfortable putting a compressor across the main mix.  I will use a software mastering compressor in the computer, but even then, not too much.

Hey Guitar,
Check out the FMR Audio RNC.  If you use it in "Supernice" mode, it's pretty damn transparent yet you'll notice everything just seems louder.

It can definitely give you that "glue" that you hear on most records.  Very clean, very clear.

I hope this helps.

I've tried a few stereo compressors on the mix bus and while I'd agree with Harvey, I also had good luck with the RNC.  Settings; Supernice, Ratio 2.5:1, Attack all the way counter clockwise (left), Release .3ms and 4db of compression at peaks or adjust to ear.

I have used the rnc a bit and found it worked fine,  I have been using an aphex compellor model 300 for quite some time now.  It doesnt seem to compress much, just takes off a few db very smoothly and acts like a nice glue.  You can find them cheap.

I also mix without a 2 buss comp. I mix to Wave Lab and then sometimes us a plugin' . Most of the time ,I leave that whole ball of wax to the Mastering guy. It just seems like the stuff jumps better and images better if I leave it alone. This might be because I can't yet pay for a great buss comp.
