All I Need
« on: September 16, 2008, 11:17:41 PM »

I am sure plenty of you are familiar with the new Radiohead album, In Rainbows.

Ever since I first listened to it, I could never get over the awesome drum sound on track 5, "All I Need."   Completely dead and slightly smothered, and the kick drum has a sort of distortion, or bite, to it.

Any idea how one would even go about getting drum sounds like these?  I'd assume Nigel did it with minimal editing, so I am really interested in how this kind of magic is made... It really is a unique drum sound.

Hey Joe (Sorry everyone, had to be done)

That drum sound really doesn't appear to be particularly odd... are you sure you mentioned the right track?

It's just a dry drum track...

Anyone else have an idea?

Real dry, real dead, real hot, real compressed...I would guess.  I know they used a lot of different drum sets, including a real small one.

I'd imagine that in tracking they distorted some of the drum tracks.

Yeah I get that feeling too... some distortion in the kick or whatever.  They are obviously dry as can be, but they sound so great that way... I'd like to know about the mics used and the kit Oooh well

I often hear that type of kick sound when fooling around with bizarre settings on an aggressive compressor.

For me, I think it's a bold choice of kick on #8 - House of Cards. Big, thumpy, sub-rich and topped off with a huge delay/verb.

Wicked record that is, wicked.

Cheers,

Stefan

I agree, I have wondered since I heard that, my favorite song on the cd, if that is through a spring reverb because it has that little twangy bounce to it.  The huge reverb on his voice is great too.
