Actually, I thought about it. -"Maverick" really is an excellent way to describe him.
From the history/language book "Made in America" by Bill Bryson, -quoting from memory:
-The word Maverick honours Samuel Maverick, a Texas cattle-owner who refused to brand his cattle, claiming -when asked by others why he didn't mark his property- that it was cruel to animals. -In fact, the true reason was so that when stray/wild/unbranded cattle were found, he could send his ranchers to claim them as his property.-So there you have it. -Someone who claims to be looking after the interests of others, while in fact serving to surreptitiously benefit himself and others close to him.

"-Maverick"... -yeah, -that sounds about right to me.
