Got a Hedd 192!!!! ( and a headache for a while)
« on: August 29, 2008, 11:06:38 pm »

Hi,
I have just received my beloved Hedd192.
So, my 02R96V2 will no longer do the a/d d/a tasks.

I am facing some intermitent behavior.Please, point me what might I be doing wrong and if these Hedd symptons are normal:

I am installing it here as follows:

AES out (enclousure) of a 192 I/O Digital >>>AES IN of  Hedd 192

Then, Hedd Analog XLR LR Outs to Pendulum OCL2 XLR ins ;

Pendulum OCL2 XLR outs to Crane Ibis EQ XLR ins;

Crane Ibis EQ XLR outs to Hedd Analog Ins ; Hedd DIg AES outs to 192 I/O AES Dig Ins.

I did the same thing substituting the return to the 192 I/O digital AES In for a Tascam DA40MK2 (testing both its AES Dig in and SPdif ins, then adding an spdif cable at  the hedd SPDI fouts).

a) Hedd ignores the analog loop ;

b) Hedd takes a considerable long time to recognize a new digital source;

c)Hedd clips severely if processing is set to a/d, even if all colour buttons (pentode, triode, tape) are Zero.
At the manual it is said that Hedd would never create Overs by redefining the average level.

d)From nothing, the analog loop started functioning. Do we have to wait for the unit to function/warm up?

e)Everytime we change the source to apply the colour, signal stops completly. what a P.I.T.A.

e) Also, a little off-topic, when I used the 02R96 to feed the OCL2, i used two of its sends with a "semiblanced 1/4 stereo connection".
I do not understand why the OCL2 in unbalanced. Now when signal leaves Hedd, of course it is somewhat hot for the OCL2, so Ineed to use lighter settings of threshold, ratio.

So, might it be better to use unbalanced connections in the whole chain?

Thanks

Hi, I think I am understanding it... (Blond girl syndrome)
Processing button is a multi-purpose control...
A/d >analog loop in
d/a > the same
Digital..  Bypasses the loop.

wow! The manual is not very clear about this button.

Master Clock: tested 44k and WC. Same sound quality.

Pro Tools 192 I/O Digital is the master for this test.

I lowered the 6dB makeup gain at the OCL2 so as to make the overs go home. Smile

The manual that came with my unit seems to be pretty old, even mentions operation up to 96k only.

However, the unit is labeled to be manufactered on MArch, 2008.

If using it as your A-D, try running it on internal clock and clock PTHD to it.

Hi,Adam. It was already 2am and I did exactly what you have just suggested. Stereo image improves a little bit.

Comparing Hedd and 02R96 (!!), I realized the highmids are somewhat clear, the bottom seems to have that 1.0 dB plus of depth and the differene that surprised ewas the centerimage. With the 02R96 it seemedabit cloudy.

However,I ask you guys If I must run alltheoutboard unbalanced, since seesthat the Ibis EQ hypes sound so I can not go verymuch with the colourbottons of the Hedd.

I also could not use the colour button( leval 3 or 4) oftheIbis, while applying small amounts of the Hedd colour. It sounded harsh.

Until a few days ago (when I was using the 02R96 as an a/d and d/a) I could go with the Ibis colour up to 4 and overall sound did not sounde bit sqeezed.

Yes, before you folks point me, it is the same source material, it wasnot overclippedand I even lowered the OCL2 makeup gain and threshold.

I time aligned the "load in" (print file that had the OCL2 + Ibis+ 02R96 signature with  a "load in" (print) of the actual combi of Hedd +OCL2+ IBis so as to do far comparisons.

EQ and  compressor settings were all equal.Make-up gain and threshold were slighlty reduced with the new chain.
