Great project Darius and Tom, I'll be checking the progress daily.

How high is the ceiling and will you be using all the height?

Hey Sam! Good to see you here!

Height of building ceiling is 6 meters. The studio outer shell is 4,35m and the highest ceiling point inside the studio is 3,20m. Though that's the height at which the fabric is - so "visible" height - not the inner shell height - which is about 25 cm higher.

What's great about Darius's building is that it really put no constraints on the ceiling design. So the height is exatly what it should be for a room that size.

Hi,

just wanted to say congratulations Darius with the new space, and congrats to both Tom and Darius for a great design and a great choice of an acoustician.

Isn't that just great?  Very Happy

I'll be following your building with interest, as I plan on (yet again) redoing my own room, at least within the constrains the building allows.

Cheers,
Thor

Meanwhile, work has started in Brussels on the diffusers for the ceiling and back wall.

In total there will be 12 of these mothers!

Beautiful!
What wood is that? Birch?
The space you found looks really great.

I wish you all the best with your new studio!

Jonas, thanks  Smile

The wood is called "Ayous".......a while ago Thomas explained to me why it's a good choice for this application, but i forgot what he said........sorry!

Darius, can you give a ball-park figure of what the renovation is going to cost?

I would also like to hear more about that wood too, so maybe Tom could tell us more.

By the way, two pictures per day is not satisfying my appetite, so could you up that to like twenty?

Hey Sam,

Actually, my woodcrafters came up with this choice of wood (Ayous) after we built the first prototypes of this series a few years ago.

Two main reasons:

- It's lightweight. I'd say in between Pine and Balsa (I believe it's in the same family as the latter). But yet the density is just right for this application (0.38). The diffusors are each over 45kg a piece and would be over 60/65kgs if built in pine or any other denser wood.

- This wood doesn't crack or change shape with time, which when you invest in long term acoustic furniture is a must. It doesn't tend become more yellow either.

It's also rather easy to work with - a plus when in Darius's case the woodcrafters need to cut, place and adjust about 1800 studs...

More structure goes up, along with the big beam that'll support the ceiling / floor above:
