Actually, my woodcrafters came up with this choice of wood (Ayous) after we built the first prototypes of this series a few years ago.
Two main reasons:
- It's lightweight. I'd say in between Pine and Balsa (I believe it's in the same family as the latter). But yet the density is just right for this application (0.38). The diffusors are each over 45kg a piece and would be over 60/65kgs if built in pine or any other denser wood.
- This wood doesn't crack or change shape with time, which when you invest in long term acoustic furniture is a must. It doesn't tend become more yellow either.
It's also rather easy to work with - a plus when in Darius's case the woodcrafters need to cut, place and adjust about 1800 studs...
