Amsterdam Mastering - construction thread
« on: August 26, 2008, 04:39:53 PM »

I'm happy to be able to start this thread, which will document the construction of my new mastering studio in Diemen (a suburb of Amsterdam)

This thread will be pretty mammoth as I intend to post lots of photos of this high-end build, so check back here regularily for updates.

The designer will be along shortly to give some technical info about the design.

Background to the project:

September 2007: With the arrival of my baby daughter I decided it was time to relocate my studio closer to my home (in Amsterdam). The search for a suitable building began, and I also began talking with various designers in the EU and US.

January 2008: A building was purchased and a designer contracted: Thomas Jouanjean of NORTHWARD Acoustics

Jan 08……August 08: Plans were drawn up and negotiations started with various building companies. Eventually I settled on this company, which specializes in precise, interior work. J van der Marel Constructing & Interiors

Ok, let’s get this madness going with some photos and plans and things.

The building definitely looks like it could have a lot of really good potential for both acoustics and vibe.  Congratulations on your soon to be upgrade!

Darius, this is just the beginning of a big big work...
you'll see the best side of Thomas along it when he'll follow & survey its evolution...
best choice !!!

considering the amazing work he've done for my small place i'm sure that with a such big room, it'll sound marvellously well !!!

Grongrats from me too!
lots of vibe.
By the way, your plan looks pretty close to the one George A. did for me.

Thanks guys!

Here's some photos of the space with the 2 walls removed (one was a floor to ceiling wall creating a storage area, the other was a darkroom on the first floor (no, it wasn't a gay club before i bought it, it was a photo studio!)

Hi Darius,
Does the plan allow for that natural light to come in from over the garage door? I put in 3" glass bricks so I can have the light. Also, from the pictures it does not look like a high traffic area & there seems to be some distance from your neighbors. Why the floating floor? looks like a nice cement slab floor already. with that said,My cement floor was a bitch to jack hammer out ducts for the audio/power lines.

There are many reasons why the floor is floated:

- In Holland, the water is so close to ground level in the earth, that the building techniques for stabilizing those buildings include resting it all on big concrete poles, often deeper than 12m in the ground. With time, there is a high risk that a big cavity will appear just under the concrete floor. When it happens, the floor is therefore very sensitive to vibrations and resonates very easely.

- it is still an industrial area with trucks driving every now and then. Because of the phenomenon described first, and the fact that a big truck engine running at low speed will generate a lot of LF (aerial and solidian transmission), decoupling was judged necessary.

- The heating system (tube circuits) is hidden in the existing concrete floor, therefore, it is impossible to risk damaging it in any way (even drilling in it is out of the question). Furthermore, because of the phenomenon described higher, degrading it is clearely not an option either as it would compromise the building's integrity.

- The direct neighbour plays loud music from time to time which should never disturb Darius. The neighbour is directly behind the wall on the left of Darius's room.

So Darius will be sitting in a room decoupled from 13Hz and will be therefore isolated from all possible noise pollutions. The new floor will also contain all ductings for audio and electric cables.

Hi Ed,

re: Light - i thought long and hard about this. Obviously natural light would have pushed up the cost, and that, along with the fact that both Thomas and Fran Manzella advised me against it (for acoustic reasons), i decided to do it without. I also take regular breaks and am in and out of the studio all the time. The rest of the building is very bright, so i feel fine about this.

re: Isolation - just to add to what Thomas said, this studio will be competing with the best in Europe. Therefore there must be no possibilty that a session could be disturbed by outside noise!

Alrighty, here's some pics of the Sylomer (rubbery type material) being laid down. The sylomer isolates what comes above from the existing floor (more on that later!):
