A question from a DVD newbie:


I just got a DVD of a show I played. I want to break it up into individual, song-length clips to post on Utube. How to do this?


The DVD has two folders-- one labeled "Video RM" and the other "Video TS". Inside "TS" are BUP, IFO, VOB, type files. Inside the "RM" folder are BUP, IFO, and DAT files. All are new to me


I am an audio recording engineer, but DVDs are new to me. Is there an inexpensive application to buy? Suggestions?

DVD video format is weird because of menus, multiple soundtracks, and trailers and stuff.

Try handbrake (Windows and OS-X) or mediacoder (windows only).

Both are freeware, and capable of extracting video from DVDs.   Note that neither will extra video from copy-protected commercial DVDs.... hopefully the DVD you were given does not have copy-protection enabled.   If it is copy-protected, you'll need a ripper that can crack the copy-protection scheme.

The ripping tools are not illegal, and they're easily found with google... but be aware that using them to extract video from commercial DVDs, may be illegal depending on where you live.
