Question re microphone design.
« on: July 07, 2008, 04:53:41 PM »

Does anyone know if it is possible to construct a microphone capable of recording distortion-free sounds across a wide decibel range?

I work for a large diesel engine manufacturer.  We test chemical pollution controls which also function as sound abatement.  Is is possible to record the sounds without any of the distortion normally caused by very high decibels?  Or is this a theoretical impossibility?

Thanks everyone.

You might get more and better answers if you post this in Klaus' microphone Forum above.

It depends upon what you mean by "any of the distortion normally caused" by high sound pressure levels.

There are measurement microphones for such things.  Visit  http://www.bkhome.com/bk_index.asp?link=http://resource s.bkhome.com/peop_bk1.html

Tell them what you're looking for.  I'm sure they make it.
