Wishing for more than two hands?
« on: June 20, 2008, 03:36:31 PM »

The thing I probably like most about analogue processing is that one can operate two things at the same time. Knobs. Hands. Physical.

One can run filters agains each other, operate thresholds and ratios simultaneously and so on. A hard thing to accomplish with mouseklicking...

Sometimes I wish I even had more hands. Like a third. Maybe a fourth.

Do this sometimes come across your minds during moments of tweak?

Best Regards

I have 6 toes on one foot, but haven't figured out how to incorporate that into my workflow yet.....

Reminds me of the good old days on the hundreds of albums I did with Bob at Masterdisk on 61st.  Both his two and my two hands were very busy at times!

nope. haven't felt the vibes seeping through knobs, sliders,
buttons, or switches (be they silky, crunchy, whatever...)
perhaps i should monitor louder?

This was not about the vibes or romantic glow of analogue or knobs or whatever, it was about being able to control more than two parameters at once.

hi patrik;

what do you think about daw control surfaces? i think they are faux!

i would like to see more science applied to mastering. to me, it means
making one adjustment at a time, then making an assessment,
then another adjustment. the adjustment could alter two
or more paramters, but the important thing is that one
is always making a controlled comparison between
two known states. once one puts two hands on
two controls and moves them, it seems to
be way more difficult to keep track of
the former state. imo, that is
too important to lose.

a lot of people think detented knobs are needed only for recall.
i think that they also work with a scientific approach much
better than continous controls. so if one has detented
controls, and one is strictly using a-b comparisons
on every move they do, then i think one could do
the same work in about the same time
with one hand as with two.

Jeff,

I haven't tried those, but I can imagine that they are probably vital in order to achieve excellent results with digital.

All the things described above can actually be done using software and a hardware control surface device, mind you.

You can open up several plug-ins and attach all their parameters to individual knobs and faders and go crazy.

With that said, analog processing and controlling still feels (and usually sounds) better somehow. Maybe it's the response that differs (ie not a fast enough response from the software in comparison), or perhaps it's the sometimes increased complexity of change in the sound from analog hardware from tweaking only one parameter.

Isn't it what automation is all about - automating the process so you don't have to have more than two hands?

When I did mixing, and no we did not have any automation on our sound board, I use to have to have some help from others when we were doing a complicated mix and it was FUN and a little bit chaotic to say the least.

I have not found that I need more than two hands in mastering unless I am not doing it correctly.....<GRIN>

I wonder if astronauts or pilots wish for the same thing.
