the C-12(brass ring) are hard to find and are pricey. If you shopped around some vintage dealers you could track down a pair of non C-12 EB's for a reasobable price I am sure.

but to answer your question...sputniks maybe? Give them a listen. Also for overheads try a pair of chemeleon labs TS1's. They are very cheap and sound amazing.

My Sputniks 'remind' me of my 414EB/brass CK12--in a certain way more than my friend's 414TLII does.  YMMV.

Didn't he say Teflon not Brass?

They are not so hard to find.

Yes, the reference was to the white plastic (nylon, actually) diaphragm.  You can find those everywhere.  Talk to Toni Fishman at http://www.vintagetones.com.  He can set you up.

Well stated Harvey!

The S-7 has equivalent specs to the 214 at half the dough.

And . . . It comes in THREE FLAVORS!!!!

Cheers!

It's true.  The Law of Averages is against that.  At some point, one of them has to be good.

Geez, I had a chance to buy a brand new 414B-ULS for $400, when a nearby music dealer went out of business.  I listened to it for several days, then gave it back.  I thought it was just as harsh as the Chinese mics people criticize here.

As far as Chinese mics, yeah, my first impression was that they were all shitty, with peaky high ends.

But, after trying a lot of different Chinese mics, my first impression changed. I found some really nice mics that didn't have that shrill sound and I'm happy to report that they were consistent in quality, since I tried several of the same model.

So yeah, I've got some Chinese mics here, and I'm not ashamed of it.

I agree totally about the 414 ULS.  I had a pair of 414B ULS and couldn't get rid of them fast enough once I came to know them well.

I'm just ragging on Chinese mics.  I'm sure there are fine models and brands.  It was an easy target so I took my shot.

Right now, I just got the MXL Genesis, their new flagship mic, and I'm gonna put it through its paces this weekend.  So far, it looks like they got a lot of things right with this mic.  It's built like a tank.

Sorry that I'm this late to the dance, but the 214 should theoretically be a little more than half the mic a 414 is...now a 207 on the other hand...
