Renewing..
« on: May 29, 2008, 06:13:41 AM »

Thoughts for today. I try to think fresh every day, but sometimes it's easy to get a little stuck in the rails.

I've done a LP and several singles and EP's for a hardcore punk/metal band, some CD some vinyl. The combo has always been a certain recording/mixing engineer and the band, and the sound has been great from the beginning, but pretty similar in all cases.

These guys have been very pleased with my masters, and now that a new EP came in from them, I thought to break out a little and do it all a little different. Remember, the previous sounds would've worked just fine and ended up in a good sounding master.

So I delivered something which was a little cleaner, a little easier around 1k and so on. I loved it, the guys loved it, everyone happy.

When you work a lot with someone, it's easy to think they're after your sound, which is the case, but it's not just one sound.

Experimenting is cool, and if there's trust between you and your customer, you can always suggest something new. They know you can deliver.

Excellent post J, thanks for a little inspiration. Clients absolutely DO trust your experimentation. I recently used a  Passive EQ, circa 1949 on a coupla projects.
We all agreed it worked.
