Speaking as one who's unashamedly been borrowing a fair amount from early 80's ZZ Top lately  ......... cool !

AI's not my bag though ....... didn't know that there was a new season final  until after it was over . Thanks for posting the link .

I do not want to be overly critical, but I did not think that vocal performance was special. It reminded me of a typical bar band. I love ZZ Top but David's singing did not add another Z to the Top.

I borrowed my 18 year old daughter's ipod shuffle today to find out what was listening to.  After Alica Keys, Kenny Chesney, some indie rock stuff, then........ZZ Top's Lagrange....what!!!!!!!!!!  I love her taste in music even more.

I just listened to some of David Cook's previous performances. My impression of him just changed--he is a fine singer. Maybe the reason I did not like the ZZ Top vocals was the mix on the performance--his voice was not up front enough for me. Also, it is kind of hard to step into ZZ and add to what they already do. Perhaps that is why it did not resonate with me.

I've been watching... since the auditions.

Say what you will but there were some excellent singers this season.  Although David Cook was not the best singer, he was the one who most appealed to the american people.

I feel like He's gonna sell a lot of records. (whatever that means)

What I noticed last night was that no matter how good the AI contestants were. none of them could stand with the pros.

Syesha sang with Seal.  I thought and still think she is a great singer but singing next to a seasoned pro she missed the mark.

They all did.

I really don't care, but why aren't they as good as pro's IF these are the best unknown singers in the country? Pro's all come from somewhere, and I know plenty of people with the chops who are unknown...

Seal was Great! Big sound and vibe and I truly love that song.

I thought the sound was really good. Funny how when the Jonas Brothers performed the sound just went away. I could just imagine the mixer pushing up the Bass fader and saying, "There's nothing here!". ha....

From a purely musical point of view, I am just so tired of voices like David Cook's.  I admit to not having watched anything but snippets of American Idol this year, but from what I can tell, his idea of emotion is more constipation (as opposed to less).  "Constipado".

The greats may or may not have sounded strained when they sang, but it was usually when they were STRAINING, not as a matter of course.  Listen to Robert Plant or John Lennon or Kurt Cobain, for chrissakes, and at low volume, they don't sound like they're pinching one off.  I can't say the same for the average (male) AI contestant.

You can't manufacture desire.  You can't manufacture sincerity.  You can't manufacture hours in the trenches.  You just can't.

Hahaha...

I love it.

Constipado - straining, with less movement.

When I have a singer that I know can handle a good joke I will sometimes ask if they need to take a break... they ask why ... I mention they sound like they need to "go". (then duck)

Constipado is going to be a term I use a lot!

Heh, "constipado" is a brilliant term. I believe, though, that it was perhaps not invented, but maybe perfected somewhere between Eddie Vedder and guys trying to be Eddie Vedder--Scott Weiland on the first couple of STP records, Scott Stapp, etc. It all sounds like they're trying to force out a dump while singing.

"EEEEEEEVahn frloohhoohww"

I think it was the way they constipated the breathing coming out of their mouth to perfect that technique. I can't STAND the yarling technique. It seems like every "credible" singer drops at least a couple of yarls in there and to make matters worse, I hear some of the big established singers still doing it. Bo Bice must have graduated from the AI School Of Yarling Technique.

Jack Endino on yarling.

it was simply a bad idea to knock the dust off those guys and put them in that setting.  they looked terribly uninterested in playing that gig.  david appeared to be feeling equally out of place with it even though i think he did as good a job as can be done with something that simple - i'm glad he didn't try to do too much with it.  some of the pairings they come up with are just stupid and that one was borderline stupid for me.

i agree that seal was great.  also great to see him when it feels like his career has lost some ground.  he's my fav pop singer.

george michael was great and impressed the hell out of me.  the song was beautiful and though he sounded like he had a bad cold (which he mentioned at the end - something i wish perofmers would NEVER do), he really delivered it.  makes me actually want to go to see him on his upcoming tour.

carrie underwood was killer.  what can i say?  she has really blossomed into a fantastic performer who can really sing.  on the other hand, i (EDIT) think last year's winner, jordan sparks, was as awful as the day she won it all.  hasn't changed one bit - sharp as hell the whole time.  made me kinda nuts because she just doesn't have it and there were others last year that do.

overall, i thought the show was fine and it doesn't really matter who wins.  glad it was those two guys were up there though.

Invented AND perfected long before them by Bruce Springsteen.

Oh! My family and I enjoy American Idol. It is what it is, and sometimes you get to hear some great performances - sometimes not, but whatever.

Now I know I'm going to get slagged for this, but I really liked Jason Castoro...the guy with the dreds. While not the greatest singer, I thought he had good tone and more importantly ALWAYS sang from somewhere deep inside. Nothing phony about him, he seems like a good spirit. There is something about his simplicity that I think is appealing.

David Cook OTOH, to me, seems like a guy with a good resume that would be an easy sell to a board room full of execs trying to pick a winning horse. I don't think he represents the direction musical tastes and style are moving towards with the younger generations. To me he already sounds dated. I think Daughtry was the last gasp of air in that direction and there is no sense in trying to push it further.

For the record, a Google search revealed her name to be Siesha Mercado. I can only speak for myself, but I would love to see her name used instead of the way she is being described at this point.

From the spot watching I did through the season - so a limited view - I found her to be great on camera but pitchy or not, she just never seemed to fully connect emotionally to all her songs (that I saw) or really let her guard down.

I can't imagine a label not giving her a shot with her national exposure and look.  She may be able to grow into something more special but hard to tell from the peanut gallery.

I thought the year Carrie Underwood won that her performance at the end was very pitchy and she didn't seem all that special to me.  But she has really become GREAT at what she does and the public buys her records, which has only happened to a few winners.

Hard to tell who will do what in the long run.
