I have to say that the modded SP-1 has become my go-to mic. And I have a choice of many fine mics now. Maybe it just matches my voice.

MCA SP-1 Test
How to get it modded, and I understand he may have some new tricks for the upgrade.

I just got my modded SP-1 back from Jim, and did a quick test. So far, I am impressed!

My multi-purpose favorites for under $1000 (a few have already been mentioned):

-Beyer m160
-Shure ksm32
-Langevin CR2001
-AKG D19c (also a GREAT vocal mic, believe it or not)
-Oktava mk012 (wonderful with the Dorsey mod, ok without it)

Quote:

Do you have any idea how your mod would stack up sonically to Royer's tube/transformer mod?

I did the Royer tube/transformer mod to an MXL 2001 a few years ago. Dave Royer even walked me through it. It's a wonderful mic - sees a lot of action in the studio.

I'd like to know more about certain RODE microphones.
I'm particularly interested in the NT2A which
nobody mentioned here. Anything good or bad to
say about it anyone? Is it way different than
the NT2000 in it's sound...can it do a vintage
U87 like thing? Probably not or at least one
person would of mentioned it...right?

I'm also interested in Langevin CR2001's and
VTL CR3's which I guess are impossible to get.

Anything anyone?

Oh...I'll add my Funkenwerked SM57 to the
solid mics under a grand list.

Thanks.

The NT2A sounds like the NT2000 but of course you can't configure it to all the different settings the NT2000 can since the NT2A has switches and the NT2000 continuous controllers. The NT2A is not as sturdy in built-quality in comparison, to quite a large degree.

They do not sound like a "vintage U87", whatever that is. They lean more towards a brand new U87Ai, although the mid-range is not as constipated/forward and the top end is a hair less strident/hyped.

The NT2000 is an excellent microphone, regardless of the price tag which only makes it even more so.

there is a mod for the Studio Projekts T3 I believe, and it costs about 300, so with the mod, you may be double that, but I have heard the T3 without the mod, and it is not bad at all, but the mod would clear up some of its minor muddys.
