FTP site is still the best option, imo.

Yes, FTP. There are plenty of server companies to choose from.

Either way. In fact, if you have a static IP and fast access, you can host it from your computer in the studio. I weighed the pros and cons and decided to go with a server located at an internet hub (in Dallas) with a huge connection (3 OC12s) so upload/download times are never compromised for the client. The down side is that I have to upload/download to the server and so does the client, so there is extra time on my end. The downside to hosting it yourself is that the client downloading the resulting files is limited by your upload speed, typically lower in with standard broadband (unless you go T1 or SDSL)...

You might also want to look at how easy a server will be for your clients to use. The one I chose doesn't require ftp client software, just upload and download to private secure sites that are accessed via username and passwords that I provide. Very easy.

I use Serv-U and clients can drop files right onto the server in my office.  I can network them directly to the DAW or go analog or digital out of the server.

It's like $50 or something - Great interface, you can assign clients their own USR/PASS, folders, rights, and have it automatically disable their account after a set date or just do it manually.

I'm using this company.

http://www.ftptoday.com/

Don't think they're the least expensive but they have been reliable.

I have been using www.ipowerweb.com for about 3 years. By far the best deal I am aware of. They are reliable and you can use your own domain name...I transfer stuff almost every day...and 800megs can do a lot of damage, I have two accounts.

Fast connections, I can recall one time when the system was down and one time when the system was slow in the 3 years for less than a day.

PM if you want details....I have no affiliation with them

http://www.streamload.com  - $4.95 mo. for 1gb downloads, 3gb storage.
The FTP access is limited to uploading only, but they've got a simple web interface. Folders with password only access can be created.

http://www.ibackup.com/charginghelp_new.htm is also reasonable, and they have ftp access.

If you need more bandwidth from a really fast virtual server - 80Gb a month and up - I have a reseller account through hostdime (www.hostdime.com). The plan I use comes with 16Gb of disk space and offer 80Gb a month of transfer, unlimited domains and accounts.

I'm also not affiliated - just a happy customer.
