What mic is this?
« on: April 18, 2008, 10:39:53 AM »

I've actually checked out some of the new Mariah Carey album... and I was curious to see what sort of mics she would go through for the sound she gets and I came across this clip:

Anyone know anything else about what the mic path might be... compressors, eq....?

Looks like a Sony C800.

Yeah- the Sony. But it has to be said that the way to get the Mariah Carey vocal sound is to take a mic and put it in front of Mariah Carey.

First off, as others have said, yes it's a C-800G in that video clip.
I also just had a discussion over at Blackbird about Mariah's microphone selection, and apparently they wanted an AKG C12VR and Focusrite ISA 430.

All that being said, Mariah would be a great singer regardless of the mic.

Right because you KNOW that they were actually singing takes while the camera was rolling.
And she also writes her shopping list (1:01) while singing.

Hahahah.. nice catch!

FWIW I was looking a little bit um below the mic most of the clip... ahem

Although... she was working the cans (the ones on her head) while doing "takes"

PS: Around here it is not uncommon to have a camera rolling for entire sessions.. I would say this is the case 25% of the time.

What's the deal with those mics?

Hip hop/rap/R'n'B (not really, but they call it that) people seem to be using those all the time, but I never hear rock or pop (or any other kind of) engineers say much about them.  Nowhere I have had the opportunity to work has ever had one.  Nobody here mentions them.

Is it because they cost like $8k?

Do they come with a free bottle of Hennessy?

Are they distributed by Smith and Wesson?

Can you see your reflection in them when you sing?

I don't get it...

Those are plugins, Rick...

I prefer the hardware units.
