a note about this IMP
« on: April 07, 2008, 10:38:53 PM »

so, i wanted to drop and overall note about imp17.  with three threads going, it's hard for me to get overall notes out to everyone and know you guys are seeing them.

so.  overall, i'm stunned how many submissions are in the "beat me" category.  are you guys just that competitive?  i expected under 10........man was i wrong.

also, i'm wondering who noticed that the bass tracks were out of phase?  flip the phase of either one and the low end totally slams.

first thing i do is LOOK at the relevant phase tracks (drums, bass gtr, !!!samples)

takes under 2 mins and saves a lot of strife...

Well, I'm a rank amateur (or worse); I didn't have any intention of beating anyone.  It's just that I did reference your mix (so it wasn't strictly DIY), but didn't necessarily try to match it.  Had to stick it someplace!

And, being clueless as I am, I didn't notice the phase issue (or even think about it; d'oh!).  Then again, I reamped the DI track and only used a tiny bit of the (heavily EQed) mic, so it wasn't much of an issue.

I still totally mangled the low end, though.   Rolling Eyes

I flipped the phase on the bass and the snare.  I chose "beat J hall's mix" because I liked the idea of trying to match your mix, but with the freedom to add my own twist to it.

but this MORE explains to me why there are so many "beat" mixes.

i think this is the case for a lot of people.  while matching the mix is productive in terms of learning...adding a twist is more fun.  since adding a twist doesn't fit the "match" category, the only other place to post is "beat".

but then there are guys who think they're better than everybody else.

I had spotted the out of phase bass, but it was sounding okay as is, so I left it.

Or i might have moved one of the tracks to try and align them rather than reversing the polarity...I can't remember.

Ditto over here.

I was going for a do what you want mix, but when I was finished I listened to Js mix and spend as much time on improving my mix as I did on making version 1. So it's not do what you want, not copying Js mix and that left this category as the most fitting.

I noticed that the few mixes I heard are way more consistent and of a higher level than normal IMPs without a ref mix. The ref mix made me work twice as hard and it seems I'm not the only one.

I struggled to get the low end of the bass strong throughout the track, I should be more aware of phase issues next time.

I didn't enter mine in the Beat-the-J thread, because I didn't have time to listen to J's mix...

though now that I listen to your mix, I think my mix is competetive. Wink

Too bad maybe... I would be interested to know what Brad and Dave think of my mix.

This was a lot of fun to mix.. I had to work fast this time, and the tune was a good chance to do that.

Re: the bass tracks.. yah, I (eventually) noticed the phase.  The DI bass guitar is central to my mix, so filling it out with bottom from the mic'd bass was something I spent a lot of time on.

I guess I looked at it as a situation where I'd been given a rough mix that gave me style points and general directions, and from there tried to build off that...not so much a "OHHHH...everyone's gonna think I'm a badass cuz my mix is SO MUCH AWESOMER than j.'s."

It's interesting to be given a little more direction than normal, and seeing what that does to my decision making.

Not taking swings...just like I said...I treated THE SITUATION as if I was handed a rough mix.

Not your mix itself.
