foo fighters
« on: March 24, 2008, 05:55:38 PM »

just got my foo fighters tickets.

had to post my excitement.

they seem to be the last remaining straight rock band.  their records are never over produced, and they never seem to be anything they aren't.

and i'm thrilled that par smear is back in the band!!!!!

for large box shows, this should be a good one.  i think i'm down to muse and foo fighters for large box shows i'm willing to spend money on.

Looking forward to it. Great band. Haven't heard V-DOSC in a long time, and want to see what this hanging B stage thing is all about....

Last remaining straight rock band? What does that mean? Hetero-sexual or straight up rock and roll?

If it' the latter, I beg to differ. If it's the former, I couldn't care less.

No, Chris is still around.  Pat has been touring with them since their acoustic tour for In Your Honor.

And I agree that Foo Fighters are one of only a few "big" rock bands that are really good.

i meant "straight-up"

forgot to type the word.

i don't think pat smear and the word straight can be used in the same sentence as it relates to sexual orientation.........there is little mystery there.

yes, shiflett is still with them.  it's kinda lame to have three guitar players on stage, but pat smear rules and it's good to see him back.

they did SNL and it appeared that Pat only played the solo section.  HA....whatever

i don't think shiflett needs much help playing his leads.

i do think the foo fighters are one of kind.  sad that they are.....

It's funny...because I was listening to the new album the other day and I realized how many Foo Fighters songs I know off the top of my head without really thinking about it...somehow they've flown just under my "these guys are probably geniuses" radar, though I've been a fan from about day one.

This latest album is something really amazing.  So rockin'...so tastefully produced...good dynamics on a song-to-song level...great energy...

I'm jealous, but still oh so happy!

No doubt they are incredible. And no dou bt Kurt Cobain's genius as it related to the credit for Nirvana needs to be re-examined.

That being said, there really are quite a few great bands that still straight-up rock...

i'm not saying there are not bands that rock right now.

i'm saying none of them rock like the foo fighters.

their records are minimally produced, they sound like they are minimally edited, the sound like they have very few (if any) samples used, their guitar tones seem more natural then the typical mesa boogie triple rectifier.

until rage against the machine puts out another studio record, the foo fighters seem to be standing alone in the category of, "we're just a rock band, being a rock band"

i'm all ears though for examples of other platinum selling artists in todays studio climate that are just 'being a band"

i would love nothing more then to have a long list of such bands.

actually
pat and his WIFE rebecca are best friends of mine
i was at their wedding last year
grohl was best man
actually she just quit the band Twinsticks that pat and i were producing so she can start being a mom
i know that pat may come off as gentle, he definitely is not effeminate
it just goes to show how someone unless you know them can get pegged one way or another

i love the foo's
rami jaffee is also in the band now
he is another best friend of mine

I have always felt this way as well... Grohl has been quite silent on his contributions to Nirvana ... Judging by the Foo's material he probably had a big part in the Nirvana songwriting... a real gentleman .

Great show from a great band.

Wasn't blown away by the sound, bad coverage from a poorly hung rig. Looked awesome.

Then some junkie ripped my iPod off from my car and left me minus a passenger door window too.  Mad

i like half of it, and i haven't given the other half much attention.

from what i've put together, it's a bit different then their usual thing and i'm assuming i'll grow to love it once i understand it's direction more.

there is a definite twang to many of the songs i wasn't expecting at all.

Can't say I am...I think it's really diverse, and probably the softest record (besides the In Hour Honor acoustic disc) overall...but it's kinda refreshing for me to hear a rock band be not afraid to be "just" a rock band.  The songs all have a sense of fun or something like that...they just feel kind of effortless and very...intuitive for lack of a better word...accesible?...immediate?  Very instinctively gratifying...

I dunno...Let's just chalk it up to me not agreeing, as I think it's an incredible record.

That's the Foos' backline and PA by the look of it. So I guess the rush guys sat in with Taylor and Rami really?

Support last night was Against Me! and HiFi Hangrenades, think they're both on the whole Canadian run too.

I was at the FF show in Vancouver BC Sunday Night.
Spectacular Show -
Dave G embraces the showmanship aspect of performing prabably as much as Freddy Mercurry did (as in his enthusiasm for the stage).
That IS The Foos backline and stage that the Rush guys are on.

You should probably check out a band called Reuben

I love the Foo Fighters (and Muse - good call).

Tried to get an interview with Rich Costey but nothing doing.

Don't get me started. I can't stand any more f'n' foo fighters on my radio. Seriously, I really think most of the stuff that's getting rammed down my throat by rock and pop stations these days is pure rubbish. Editors is another band I'd seriously consider executing if it were the only practical way of shutting them up. I'm quite sure that even if nobody at the radio station liked a track they'd still take it through the rotation cycle.

From what I can gather it was the first album where they had a sizable budget, Andy Wallace mixing etc.

I like it, but imo sounds like they were pushing a little to hard for mass market appeal.

Their earlier stuff is great though. All mixed and produced by Chris Sheldon, who bizarrely mixed the only foo album I still rate.

Out of interest, who tracked it/ where?

Garth Richardson and Ben Kaplan.

I don't know where, I suspect Garth's place (The Farm) here in Vancouver, but may not have been.

I'll check out the other albums...  Which is your pick?

Its a difficult choice between The Vertigo of Bliss and Infinity Land. Perhaps the latter is a little more complete and quicker to get into.

While your at it check out Effloresce by Oceansize. My favorite album to plug, in the vain hope that this band will get at least some recognition.

The Uk has some quality bands at the moment. Unfortunately you would never realise this judging from what gets playlisted.  Crying or Very Sad

Not the best I've ever seen -- I'm a lot older than you -- but really, really good, and no bullshit about them.  I think I've seen them 3 times, all in 3K-ish venues, and they killed every time.  Glad you had fun.

i really liked how they brought a small club feel to an arena.  they were just a rock band, not trying to do any theatrical anything.  they just rock, and let their songs do the work.

they played for 3 hours as well.  and never let up or even looked the least bit fatigued.

With Foo backline gear - it bet the Foos were somewhere in Canada, and Alex and Geddy joined them for a song or two. Neal lives in Los Angeles, so is far away from the other two, who are close friends.
