there you go giving away the secret! Shocked

I've set up a bunch of them and no two behave in quite the same way. I spent a lot of time and money in blown parts to figure out how to tweak everything. I made some arbitrary rules on how I like the Zuma to work and the groove to look. I've refined how I tweak the programmer over the years. That's a secret. But it wouldn't do anyone else any good.

This is really one of the toughest concepts to really digest for me so far. Understanding what I am looking at, why it looks that way, why it should, how each affects tracking and pitch etc.
I know I cannot expect to understand everything in a matter of months.
Does bring me back to a teenager trying to work with midi, sampling, sequencing for the first times.

LL= lateral offset as a result of lateral motion
LV= lateral offset as a result of vertical motion
V= vertical offset as a result of vertical motion

Are you using more than 900ms for 33 then as well?
I've also of course forgot to change the delay when switching from 33 to 45 twice already.

33 1/3 should be 1.2s for the Zuma and 1.4s for the internal computer. I use 1.2 with the Zuma. There's a lot to keep track of.

Played around a bit and understand it.

Fitting in some decent level now(thanks paul) with the longer times.
However of course some light collisions still coming out of quiet times. would increasing the screw at back of suspension and pushing down head a tiny bit more help or hurt this issue? I do not know the physics if the head has more pressure on it when a kick drum hits if that helps or not

Check unmodulated groove for suspension calibration. If the unmodulated groove is moving around a lot or there is a big difference in depth between the inner and outer diameter the suspension needs to be tweaked. Do not do this unless you are ready to bang your head against the wall for a good long time.

For adjustments there is height, spring tension and dashpot damping. Have fun figuring it out.

Thanks for the invite. Maybe I'll be in the mood for some Yankee Bean soup this winter.

Besides the cutterhead most everything else is insanely over engineered and hard to damage. It's to your advantage in the long run to play with everything to see what it does. In the short term it will make your life much more difficult. You will do stupid things that will take serious brain power to get yourself out of.

Yesterday was prime example.
Cut a 3x12 much faster than expected. Went too smooth.
Next up badly produced and mastered disco reissue. all ready to go and I decide the test cuts not good enough for first job with new client(have to leave town in 2 hours as well).

Major chip issues. Had not had any chip issues in over a week. Ruin another lacquer. Finally discover tube on the cutterhead is clogged  now. Off comes the head. Fix it up just in time to need to head out of town.

And one of two 7" jobs shows up at the plant today with minor scratches on each side. other job 100% fine....

Spent way too long setting up a loud dance cut after trying to squeeze an LP out. Just pleased I understand the issues now and the differences for setting up the vms+co.
Though I think tomorrow I will cut the next dance record before this punk lp

I looked here but could not see it.

What facilities are doing DMM mastering in the US now?

Years ago I used John Golden who did really nice sides for me.

Thank you!

NONE except for the Scientologists who now own two DMM lathes - the ones formerly owned by K-Disc and Europadisk.  They use them in their mastering studio in California to transcribe tapes of L. Ron Hubbards' speeches onto metal masters and then place these into time capsules that contain hand cranked turntables so that you'll be able to still hear his words even in a post-apocalyptic future without an electric grid.  I'm not making this up! - sometimes truth is stranger than fiction.  Afaik they will not accept projects from outside of their organization.

DMM mastering is still available in Europe from:
Abbey Road - UK
The Exchange - UK
Pauler Acoustics - Germany
Optimal Media - Germany
GZ - Czech Republic

There might be 1 or 2 other places that I've missed in that list - but those are the ones I know of.

Best regards,
Steve Berson

None unless you're in good with the L. Ron set.

Hello,

some info about our cutting lathes:
we here in GZ have two DMM lathes - both in everyday use (SAL 84 and modified SAL 82, SX84 heads) and also one lacquer (VMS 70) as a backup or for special occasions.

Everything works fine Smile.

Our R&D department prepares some new hardware and software for best possible D/A conversion 192kHz, 24-bit and digitally (from PC) controled cutting with presets etc....

Jiri -
Thanks for the info, and welcome to the forum.  Does GZ make their own copper blanks as well?  Do you provide these to others also or are they for GZ's use only?  What kind of transfer desk are you using?  Any photos of the lathe/studio you can share?

Best regards,
Steve Berson

Hi Steve,

I'm at home now so I can send more info on Monday. I work in premastering/authoring department (checking supplied source files, CDs and tapes), not directly in mastering so I am not specialised on mastering things or galvanics.

Yes, we produce our own copper blank plates, but I don't know if they can be sold outside, probably not, it is enough only for our DMM.

Some reports and photos from GZ:

Older 2003 article in czech language but with many photos:

Have a nice weekend Smile
