I have $1600 to spend on two new mic pres. I want a big, clean, and punchy sound. I am mainly looking for sweet drum pres. I have heard that anything API will do me just fine, but I have also heard that the John Hardy's are amazing. Any suggestions? I am open to other options too.

I dig the Hardy stuff on drums just fine. I can't comment on the API stuff because my experience with them is limited,{unfortunately}. The above advise is great though,. Get both in the room and decide for your self.

I wish I could afford to have both at the same time, but the Averill's are hard to get and only have a 10 day refund policy. I would, under normal circumstances get both and return the lesser, but I can't this time.

Well, that about summs up my BAE 312A   . It also has a nice extended low-end, great for recording bass DI.

Why not get a real API from Mercenary instead of getting the Averill version?  Then you could compare both units, which of course will be a much better way to evaluate which one works better for you than reading about other peoples' experiences.
