friedman style vocals
« on: June 02, 2004, 06:21:16 AM »

eh there 1st post on this forum,
i've been recording vocals for the last couple of months using a sennheizer e8455.for my guitars the mic seems to be fine actually quite good .
but the vocals are dead and low in volume, maybe i need a pre amp?recording into cubase when i eq and compress my words come out really hissy (ssssh, ttttts)on certain words, very annoying, tryed the old tights on a coat hanger trick

i cant sing to well, trying to get similier sound vocals as flaming lips, mercury rev, sparklehorse, delgadoes, dave friedman produced stuff.

think i need a vocal pre amp, which one?any words of wisdom much appreciated?

Dave Fridmann uses quite a lot of band pass filters on his vocals and delay tails. He's also got quite a bit of experience in getting vocal sounds. Good luck.

all microphones require a preamp to boost the level up to line level......

you can investigate this in harvey gerst's forum for further details

hissy vocals where compression is envolved is due to a slow attack and a considerable amount of compression.....speed up the attack, or back off on the gain reduction

fridman hears things in an unusual way, and he has a great sense of balance and placement for his "non-traditional" approach to sonics.......i don't think obtaining his sounds will be that easy.

Just to stir the pot a little bit..

One of my partners just did some work with him in his studio and they tracked most of his vocals with a SM 58.

Not sure what they used for a preamp, but a high quality preamp can make even a lowly mic sound amazingly better.

Save your coins and check out something by Cranesong, Great River, Drawmer etc. A high quality preamp will be a tool that will pay off with better recordings for years to come.

I'll second the fridmann sm-58 for vocals. When i worked with him (right after he did the pinkerton record) he just sorta put up a 58 and then in the mix process took the eventide and spun the knob at random until he found a wierd sound patch he liked - very little fussing around. He did do alot of cool triggering stuff in the mix though. We also recorded some vocals through the studio intercom, and telephone, etc.

fridmann didn't track very much of the sparkelhorse stuff

they are an exception to the rule as mark linkous has a very unique approach to recording his songs

a lot of the crazy guitar tones and weird vocal effects are printed to tape and that's that!

ya know, i don't remember exactly how much he cost - it was back in 1997 and he only did 1 track on an ep with lots of different producers (kurt ralske, al sutton, etc). I do remember that he was offered plane fare to fly out and declined in favor of driving his beat up old van and some gas money. The track he worked on is called "Birthday" from the Getway Cruiser "Phones Calling" ep.
