Here it's about
40% 24/44.1
30% 24/88.2
25% 16/44.1
5% other (16/48 or 24/48, very occasionally 24/96, plus a little 1/2" tape)

I've been encouraging the studios I do work with to deliver me 24/88.2 so that's been a growing figure over the last couple of years.

So all in all it seems somewhat consistent across the board.

Without starting a new thread,  I think it would be interesting to see, for the guys who work with 1/2 inch and 1/4 inch tape,  what percentage of your work comes in on analog?

Even though, "sound wise" when done right, it would be my favorite medium for mixdown,  I can't see it being done to much anymore, maybe 2 to 4% of all work for anyone who specializes in it ???

In the past five years we have had TWO projects come in on tape. I would say our percentage is way less than 1%.

Of the full mastering jobs I get(not just cutting) about 20% come in on tape. I get more 1/4" than 1/2". I wouldn't say I specialize in it. I don't do restoration and only work with 1/4" and 1/2" 2tr. 15/30 ips.

Purely guessing here, but something like:
  • 30% - 24/44.1
  • 30% - 24/48
  • 2% (or less) - 24/88.2
  • 20% - 24/96
  • 10% - DSD
  • 3% - 1/4" analog
  • 5% - 1/2" analog

I usually track at 24/48 but the ME that I've been using lately wants my files at 16/44.1. It's been bugging me lately but his stuff sounds good to everyone.

Should I find another ME?

That's friggin' weird...  But if it sounds good, then... well...  It's still friggin' weird.

Tape:  I don't even keep ol' Bessie in the room with me anymore.  A project here and there...

We still get a fair amount of tape, and love it.

Lots of transfers & remasters from decades past.

And current mixes too, there's a few "retro" studios here that mix to tape.

and an occasional layback job too.

I don't get any tape, but then again my deck isn't up to the task. It's a stock Studer B67, MK II.

The file formats go something like this:

24bit/44k1 = 50%
24bit/48k =  30%
16bit/44k1 = 15%
rest       = 5% (24bit/96k, 24bit/88k2)

A vast majority of the files are WAV files, stereo interleaved. From time to time I get AIFF, and sometimes L&R separately. Those I interleave at an instant.

48kHz files I usually downsample to 44k1 before anything. If I'll get another DAW for playback, no more SRC.

I believe....... the guy masters all digital so he doesn't want to convert. I could be wrong.

Anyways, I get

1/2inch 40%
1/4inch 20%
Mp3s 5%
44/24 35%

Mine's been coming in primarily on 24/44.1.  Maybe 25% at 24/48.

Question... (gulp)... do you guys resample at a higher sample rate when it's at 44.1/48kHz?  If you do, what software do you use?

Interested to know who does and doesn't, I guess.  I haven't been... (puts arms up to fend off blows to the face).

I don't know actual percentages - but have been receiving more and more 88.2kHz & 96kHz sources these days.  And I get a fair mix of other rates - including 16bit/44.1.  But folks definitely seem to be mixing to the 2xFs rates more - and I find myself delivering back at the 2xFs rates occasionally as well primarily for high res vinyl record pre-masters.

I've never had anyone send me or even inquire with me for 192kHz or 176.4kHz - and the same for DSD sources.

I get about 1 - 2 jobs on 1/4" 15ips a month and about 1 job on 1/2" 30ips every 3 months.  So not much but definitely enough to make it worth while to keep the deck around and in good shape, as for me working from tape often is just plain old more fun.

As far as other formats this year I've had one transfer from MiniDisc, and 2 orders from DAT (for a reissue on vinyl of some really nice 90's hip-hop) and even one from 4-track cassette.  Sometimes I wonder why I still have 7 RU devoted to 2 DAT players and an MD player - but since they were paid for a long time ago I figure I might as well still keep them around for the rare transfer.

Best regards,
Steve Berson

I usually don't resample - I just play out to the analog process chain at whatever the source rate is and capture back at whatever the delivery rate is.

I do use a few processors that have built in upsampling options in them though - namely the Sonoris EQ and LPEQ - and Voxengo Elephant - and will usually use these options when using these for post capture additional processing.

For occasional resampling chores (for the rare case that I just do digital processing only on sources that have a differnet sample rate than the delivery format) I've been just using the src built into SAWStudio - but have really been wanting to find a front end with batch capabilities for the SoX algorithm (which is available as a command line executable only currently) - http://sox.sourceforge.net/ - as it tests out to be one of the absolutely finest src's out there - and is free.

Steve Berson
