We don't have Target up here (in Winnipeg)....yet. But give it a couple more years, and they probably will be. So I can't really compare the two. WalMart's been here in Canada since....1993, I think? There's advantages and disadvantages. Advantages: more jobs, cheaper prices. Disadvantages: more
lesser paying jobs, reduced quality of items in some cases, plus they've dipped into alot of niche businesses (plus smaller mom and pop type stores, where you used to know people by name) and have hurt those places by buying bulk and then being able to sell for cheaper.
On one hand, part of me says that competition means it's survival of the fittest (and some of those overpriced places
did need to be killed off for inflating their prices all along); on the other hand, i'm not too thrilled about some specialized stores getting the axe, because once they're gone, it's just the big stores left, and i'm never really thrilled with the
experience of going into WalMart. Too bloody crowded....ALL the time. For some reason, I just have sensory overload when i'm in there....I used to work at WalMart in 1995 as one of my first jobs as a teen, and I started having panic attacks after I worked there (I now know the technical term for panic attacks....but back then, I just considered it some sort of affliction). Too much bustle....too quick, too many noises, bleeps, cash register blips, people talking, too many people, etc. It was like a symphony of noises and overactiveness. The whole experience of working there left me feeling not really good about myself at the end of the day....like a number, an android.
I can go in there now and i'm alright, but back then, I thought I was going insane!
