having never been a homeowner, i guess i don't get why the value would decrease just because there's a new WM about a quarter mile away.  any ideas?

HUGE increase in automobile and semi-truck traffic.

Leading also to increased noise.

Because that's where everyone wants to shop.

Next month it will be one year that I was strangely reunited with a girlfriend I was engaged to in 1967 back in Chicago. We broke up, so I went on the road with a band and never went back (only an occasional visit) When We reunited last year, she had been working for WM. She had her car insurance from WM. She was driving with her mother and a driver hit her and tottaly crushed her left leg. The driver that hit her was under insured and walmart picked up the bill which was over $100,000.00. When she got the insurance money from what the other driver had, WM quickly took it back AND IS SUING HER!!(my friend) She now has a metal rod in her leg and WM refused to let her back to work after she recovered. She was forced into retirement because she can't work and she would lose her small disability payment. She is attempting to get something, but WM says "if it takes 50 years we will not pay you anything" She has a lawyer, but I'm not sure it's the right one.

I was born one mornin' when the sun didn't shine
Picked up my shovel and I walked to the mine
I hauled Sixteen Tons of number 9 coal
And the store boss said, ""Well, bless my soul""
(Chorus:)
You haul Sixteen Tons, whadaya get
Another day older and deeper in debt
Saint Peter don't you call me cause I can't go
I owe my soul to the company store

Born one morning it was drizzl'n rain
Fightin' and Trouble are my middle name
I was raised in a canebrake by an old mama lion
And no high-toned woman make me walk the line

You haul Sixteen Tons, whadaya get
Another day older and deeper in debt
Saint Peter don't you call me cause I can't go
I owe my soul to the company store

See me comin' better step aside
A lot of men didn't and a lot of men died
I got one fist of iron and the other of steel
And if the right one don't get ya, the left one will

You haul Sixteen Tons, whadaya get
Another day older and deeper in debt
Saint Peter don't you call me cause I can't go
I owe my soul to the company store

Born one mornin' when the sun didn't shine
Picked up my shovel and I walked to the mine
I hauled Sixteen Tons of number 9 coal
And the store boss said, ""Well, bless my soul""

isn't funny that st. peter

the one who denied Christ

has the keys to the gates

now that is forgiveness and love in full blown demonstration

can you see what that can mean metaphysically in your own life?

it is awesome

I can't even imagine what Peter felt after the rooster crowed 3 times and Peter, (after he denied Christ) locked eyes with Him while the soldiers took Him away.

Not to mention that most Wal-Marts bring with them higher crime rates.

There's another good website called www.wakeupwalmart.com where you can read about a nationwide report done on crime and Wal-Mart.

Here are a few excerpts from the article found on their website:

• In 2004, police received 148,331 calls for service for the 551 Wal-Mart stores analyzed, averaging 269 reported police incidents per store.

• For just the 551 stores sampled, there were 2,909 reported police calls for “violent or serious crimes,” including 4 homicides, 9 rapes or attempts, 23 kidnappings or attempts, 154 sex crimes, 550 robberies or attempts and 1,024 auto thefts.

• Based on the number of reported police incidents for the sample, it is estimated police responded to nearly 1 million police incidents at Wal-Mart in 2004 costing taxpayers $77 million annually.

I heard on radio last week that WalMart servants complain about panhandlers outside the door because they earn more money than the indentured poor inside.

In many, many places, WM is the only game in town.

Perhaps it's because they drove the competition into bankruptcy. Which is definitely part of their business model. They can sell products for less than what the local competition buys them for!

We don't have Target up here (in Winnipeg)....yet. But give it a couple more years, and they probably will be. So I can't really compare the two. WalMart's been here in Canada since....1993, I think? There's advantages and disadvantages. Advantages: more jobs, cheaper prices. Disadvantages: more lesser paying jobs, reduced quality of items in some cases, plus they've dipped into alot of niche businesses (plus smaller mom and pop type stores, where you used to know people by name) and have hurt those places by buying bulk and then being able to sell for cheaper.

On one hand, part of me says that competition means it's survival of the fittest (and some of those overpriced places did need to be killed off for inflating their prices all along); on the other hand, i'm not too thrilled about some specialized stores getting the axe, because once they're gone, it's just the big stores left, and i'm never really thrilled with the experience of going into WalMart. Too bloody crowded....ALL the time. For some reason, I just have sensory overload when i'm in there....I used to work at WalMart in 1995 as one of my first jobs as a teen, and I started having panic attacks after I worked there (I now know the technical term for panic attacks....but back then, I just considered it some sort of affliction). Too much bustle....too quick, too many noises, bleeps, cash register blips, people talking, too many people, etc. It was like a symphony of noises and overactiveness. The whole experience of working there left me feeling not really good about myself at the end of the day....like a number, an android.

I can go in there now and i'm alright, but back then, I thought I was going insane!  Very Happy
