I think he means the one you are building

you know, the pretty one, with the expensive pots, the required expensive pot, to finish

Cool box.

Am I seeing this right...?

You have rotary switches for each insert (1-6) to use for bypassing each piece (to see if you really want it in line or not). These are rotary switches because (I'm guessing here...) they are quieter and/or faster than toggle switches?

Also, could you explain the Process and Monitor switches?

These rotary switches (Shallcos) have a rather huge contact surface, much larger than a toggle...

Process switch selects what source feeds the processing chain, the monitor switch determines what you listen to - any of the 6 possible sources plus the output of the DAW.

I do love it. I don't know that it sounds better than the Crane Song console, but it definitely has more flexibility, which is the reason I built it. I know it can't sound worse - a well implemented passive design cannot be surpassed in a fixed installation like this...

Pre-processing for all sources except DAW, which is post, of course...

Either way. Whatever is coming out of the DAW...

I thought you were using 2 soundcards - 1 for playback & 1 for captured material. That's why I figured the DAW position was for either the original dig file (playback) or the post-processed, captured file... So, are the D1 & D2 selects for the original dig files (playback soundcard outs)?

Sorry, misunderstood what you were asking. The DAW output is the output of workstation post-prcessing (mastered).

Okay, okay...  I'll ask...

  • How much were all the parts?
  • Are you going to "mass" produce them?
  • How much will you charge all your buddies here to put one together?
  • Would you consider putting together a "kit" package and how much would such a package go for?

How much were all the parts?

Very reasonable, about $2500.

Not really interested.

why don't you just post a parts list, minus the metal chasis, and engraving.....and let those interested track down the parts and build whatever they want?

just a thought.

The swtches are all Shallco.  The attenuator was built by Marchand electronics to a particular spec (2k5 bridged T Holco R's) the wire is PTFE coated silver-plated stranded.  Typical Mil-spec.  XLR's are Neutrik (Switchcraft are better, imo) and the box is a box.

Ask me how I know all this...

Dave

How do you have all this knowledge?
Please bring us out of the dark!

Brad,
Was there a big change in your monitor path?
I can't wait to send you some more stuff so it can go through your new console! Congrats! it looks amazing!

my .02 cents

It's basically DC's design. He told me how to do the various things (sharing a lot of experience based decisions in the process) and I incorporated them into the console as I needed them...

Huge increase in flexibilty and speed. The chain sounds the same, and though it's easy to fool yourself, I'm pretty sure it's a little more open sounding...

You could almost put design in quotes here as it was just suggesting components that I've used for many years, but in a slightly different configuration.  It's not very complicated, but I think my approach is proven to sound transparent, and be totally reliable.

In fairness, leading mastering pundits have roundly rejected B-rad's passive monitoring approach, specifically on the grounds of _reduced_ openness, so we must be on to something good...

Yeaah, that is a nice thing.

Mine is also finished, when I get a cam, I'll post a pic of it. Simple 1u thing but works very well. My monitoring mode switch is one of the best parts of it.

There's two toggle switches. When they are toggled to left and right, you're stereo. When positioned towards center, you're in mono. When both are pointing to left, you have left mono - and vice versa.

Also the attenuators before the processors are nice - 11db in 23 steps. The first position actually takes them out of the circuit so they don't cause any more load when necessary. Actually the whole board doesn't parallel unnecessary loads in any mode.
