Moving- need to make a room work...
« on: February 05, 2008, 07:55:05 PM »

So I'm getting ready to move into a new house (well actually an old house, but new for me... heh).  Until I have the time and money to build out a studio space, I need to make one of the bedrooms work for my rig.  I will be doing mixng and mastering of the recordings that I make.

I cannot move walls or windows as of now.  The floors are hardwood and the walls are plaster/lathe.  The ceiling is somewhat problematic in that it has a curve all around the top...  As you can imagine, the acoustics in there are really not particularly good for a studio space now.

Can you give some suggestions as to the best way to make this workable.  From setup to suggested treatments, etc...  My only thought as of now is that the closet will house the computers and such to help cut down on noise.

I kind of need to keep the general architecture as it exists, but setting up bass traps, etc... won't be a problem.

Here is a sketch of the room with approximate measurements:

Here are a couple photos of the room (empty) as it exists now...

Eventually I plan to convert the garage into a bit more usable workspace, but for the next year or two, this will have to work for me.

This room is workable, if small. Small is overcome with lots of bass traps. You also need absorption at the first reflection points on the side walls and ceiling. With the rear wall behind you so close, additional absorption there will help too.

Besides all the advice you'll find in past threads in this forum, here are some articles from my company's web site that address your specific issues:

Thanks Ethan.

If I set up with my rig at the end with the closet, there will likely be a window at the first reflection point on the left (as I'm looking at the speakers).

What is the best way to deal with that?

I was planning on getting some fiberglass/rockwool and framing up some bass traps.  I'll take a look at the articles on your site.

Just put some panels on stands would be the best way to go.
